I can't believe it has been a year since my surgery. Needless to say it has been an adventure filled with ups and downs. I've lost over 150 pounds and couldn't be happier, but there are days when I second guess myself whether or not this surgery was worth it. I know in the long run it is. My surgeon has recommended me to see another surgeon, Dr. Allen, for a second opinion. After seeing Dr. Allen, he ordered more test. Monday I had an upper GI. I have had many Upper Gi's before, but none at Norton's downtown. The people there were very nice. Right before the test he had me put a small amount of white crystals in my mouth and a little water. It felt like pop rocks were going off in my mouth. Then he wanted me swallow. Oh my gosh, the PAIN!!!! I though I was dying. I have been through alot this past year, but have never had pain like this before. It literally took my breath away. To make things worse, after I took the crystals the tech whispered to the doctor "she is a gastric patient, she shouldn't have taken the crystals". I was then told I would have "a little discomfort" for a couple of hours. Well it is Friday and I am still miserable. Not to mention that they have you drink the white chaulky stuff forgetting that my stomach is the size of a walnut. All they kept saying was "keep drinking". Easier said than done. Since Monday, I have been puking and have diarrhea like crazy. Sometimes it is even bloody. YUCK!!!! Has anyone else had to "drink" these crystals and have had a similar reaction? With the way my crazy body is, I would not be suprised if I am the only one this has happened to. I emailed Dr. G. to see this was normal, but have not heard back from his office yet. I thought about going to the ER, but I just can't take the chance that I am admitted. I have missed so much work since my surgery and my boss has been fantastic, but this is the busiest time of year in my office and I need to "pull my own weight". To top things off, my daughter injured her knee at a soccer tourney over the weekend in Toledo, Ohio and may need knee surgery. She has a torn MCL. We are waiting for more test results to see the extent of her injury. Thanks for letting me vent. It means alot to have somewhere to go and people understand what you are feeling. We are a special and unique group. Take care, -Ana-

Yeah, I would definitely call the Dr. and tell him what happened. Then I would probably call someone to complain about being given these crystals without first having your chart looked at or at the very least, asked certain general health questions. I hope you get to feeling better. Please take good care of yourself, even if it means you need to take some time off of work. Also, I hope that everything turns out ok with your daughter. It is awful that she may need knee surgery. Good luck and keep us informed on your progress-- Dee

Take care of you first....you will need to bew well to take care of your daughter! As far as the crystals......I would say you should call Dr G office and tell them this is an emergency situation. If you get no response, go to the ER....There is nothing normal about bloody anything and you may have damage to your esophagus as well! I don't know if this is credible with you, but if they gave you something that you should never have had (due to their negligence to review your records thoroughly) you have a good med-mal suit. Let me know if you need more info on this. But in the meantime....take care of you!

Ana, I have pain like that when I have milk (unless I limit it to 1/2 cup with low-carb Special K) or even a spoonful of icecream. I'm lactose intolerate and simply can't handle it. The pain has been so bad, I've had trouble breathing and then vomittied from the pain. No nausea from that though. These crystals have probably bloated your pouch and intestines. I would imagine they expanded you worse than soda would and we're not allowed soda unless the doc specifically says to have a swallow of club soda for medical reasons. I would definitely call the doc's office. If you don't get an answer, keep calling. This is important and they need to advise you. Gale
