Is it possible to get the RNY if your BMI is around 36? I'm about 80 pounds overweight. Thanks for any comments.

It depends on your surgeon. He or she would ultimately make that decision. My surgeon says he requires patients to be at least 100+ pounds overweight with very few exceptions.

Not sure. I guess it would depend on your surgeon, your insurance, and what co morbs u have. U could call your insurance co and see exactly what their critieria is and see if u meet it. Best Wishes Ange

Hi Angela, I think the NIH guidelines say that if you aren't 100 lbs overweight with a BMI of 40 or above you need to have a BMI of 35 or above with significant health problems i.e. Hypertension, Sleep Apnea, etc. I see you're from Prestonsburg.. You should come out to the Floyd Co. Public Library for our Support Group Meeting. It will be May 10th at 6. We sure would like to see ya.. And maybe you can learn more about surgery. Katrina

Best bet would be to start with the insurance company and find out what their guidelines are for surgery. Good luck!
