what do i need for my stay at the hospitle
From what others have said, Yes it helps to walk as much as possible after your surgery. In my case, from the time I got on the gurney in preop on monday morning until friday around noon. I maybe walked a total of 60 feet. That is probably an exaggeration at that. Luckily I didn't experience the gas pains a lot of patients have talked about. I guess someone up there figured I suffered enough as it was.
I had my sponge bath on Wed morning and was able to finally have a real shower on Friday morning. OMG that was wonderful.
I forgot to mention the chapstick, but the hospital I went to had a tube of lip stuff that tasted great and really worked well.
I took my robe and my cell phone and my own pillow. I had a complication (my stomach swelled shut) and I was in the hospital for an unexcpected five days! The robe was great because I could walk all over the place and feel "dressed." The cell phone was a lifesaver because I could call everyone (I was two hours from home). The pillow, well, it was a comfort thing for me!

My surgeon was Dr. Allen (University Surgical Associates) and he gives all of his patients a morphine pump. It took care of all the surgery pain. Because of my stomach swelling complication, I had to endure shots (every 4 hours) which helped to reduce the swelling. They hurt, but I lived through it.
I was up and walking the next morning and I walked ALOT during my hospital stay. The morphine really helped. Make sure you take pain meds right before you leave the hospital and if possible, have them call in your pain med RX to your local pharmacy so you can pick it up on the way home. Karen in Kentucky
