I agree with the first response... I quit for a month and started back up shortly after I got out of the hospital. I wish I wouldnt have picked it back up but I did.... and at the moment its my stress reliever.

How long have u been smoke free?  I quit almost 2 months ago and crave worse now then I did in the beginning.  I've also went into depression which I have been told is very normal with addictions esp. when there is a history of severe depression. Dont give up.  It's not worth having the surgery to get healthy just to ruin ur health by smoking. Goodluck...

Just a lil note to warn all pre and post ops. GET YOUR PROTEIN IN EVERYDAY!!!  I have done rather crappy with mine since day 1 and I am paying dearly with VERY slow weight loss, major hair loss, and all out feelin like shit!  PLEASE!!!!  Follow your program's rules!!

I have heard a surgeon say this and just recently read that smoking is a contributor to ulcers with WLS patients.  I would do what I could to keep my pouch good and healthy, ..no different than avoiding certain drugs and meds. thankfully I quit smoking many years ago..I can imagine it is hard...I definately know my eating is an addiction..dealing with two at the same time would be hard....you are doing great, don't give up now!!

I quit smoking before surgery with  the help of Chantix, which is a wonderful drug with little side effects. However, I quit taking Chantix when I had surgery, because it made me nauseous.  I didn't start smoking again until I was about 8 weeks out and I returned to work.

Smoking is a great stress reliever for me...I always enjoyed smoking and never wanted to quit.  Saying that, I have to agree with all the smokers that have replied thus far...I wish I had never started it again!!!  If you have been successful in quitting, I would advise not to start again. I hate myself for it, and feel disgusted with myself because of it, but at this point, not able to shake the nicotine monkey off my back. Pretty sad, especially considering everything else I have been able to accomplish and succeed at in my life.

I, too, have read medical reports stating the hazards on the pouch due to nicotine.  It is the #1 cause for stomach ulcers in WLS patients.  Thus far, I have not had any problems, but that's not to say I won't in the future...it's a risk.

Good Luck!
