How Many Ate Their "Last Meal"??

I am just curious, how many of you ate what you wanted to as a "last meal" before your surgeries? If so, what did you have?  I have been thinking about this as my surgery is 7/16 and I have been wondering what I wanted to eat as like a final "big meal" or even if I want to do it.  I think I do, but I'm not sure. Blessings to all!

I did not have a "last meal" for a lot of reasons. I guess first of all I remembered my friend having hers and sitting there thinking that that was just more weight she was going tohave to lose. Second of all I didn't want to stretch my stomach any further than it was so that maybe the 3 days of clear liquids and the bowel prep would go easier. Third, I fought for my surgery so hard and by the time the attorney called and said that I was approved I was 4 days from surgery. Fourth, I already had so many regrets when it came to food and I was going to miss so many things that I didn't want one more. I am glad that I didn't eat a last meal because I got thru all the prep fine and didn't have a long night before if you kow what I mean. Most of all because on the way to the hospital I could already be proud of myself that I restrained. Let me know what you decide. Katherine

I didn't do a "last meal" either. I was SO ready for surgery! I actually did an extra pre-op day of clear liquids because I wanted my insides to be as clean and quiet as possible. Also, don't forget that soon enough, you will be able to eat whatever you want.

Well, since my surgeon said he would NOT perform my surgery if I didn't lose some weight, I didn't have a "last meal". I guess I was afraid of my liver not shrinking.

WELL WHEN I WENT FOR MY PREOP APPOINTMENT 3 DAYS BEFORE SURGERY.  MY DOCTOR TOLD ME TO GO OUT EAT MY FAVORITE DINNER.  WE ALL WENT TO OUTBACK MY FAVORITE RESTURANT AND ATE.  BUT I DIDN'T GO OVERBOARD.  NO APPETIZERS, NO DESERTS. I WAS TOLD NOT TO GO CRAZY BEFORE SURGERY. DON'T BE THINKING EVERYDAY WAS YOUR LAST MEAL I KNEW IT WOULD BE CANCELLED IF I GAINED ALOT OF WEIGHT  20 MONTHS OUT AND I COULD CARE IF I EVER WENT THERE.  JUST DON'T HAVE A FAVORITE RESTURANT ANY LONGER.  ITS TOO EXPENSIVE AND I NO LONGER EAT THE SAME THINGS. Oh yeah, whenever I have the opportunity to eat I did..so more than sure I had a last meal, just don't remember when or where..maybe even pizza.  Since that is something i swore off due to the high carbs.  I will have a bite now and again but I am not at all a bread eater.  As for as steaks, chicken, etc.  thankfully I have no problems eating them or any other meats..so still get my fill. This evening I took my husband to Jane's favorite rest.."Outback" for fathers day..he got a steak with all the goodies, I just order salad then eat some of his steak..it was soooo good!! I am pretty compliant and I feel when eating out we should be permitted to order our portions or special request Items.  I went out to dinner with Dr. Sonnanstine, Dr. Rodriguez and the Ethicon rep..we went to Montgomery Inn ( for those not from this area, their speciality is ribs)...all I wanted was a sweet potato and a chicken breast..the lady just didn't get it..finally it took Dr. Sonnanstine who was sitting next to me to give her the "evil eye"..lol...if you can imagine that one!!..he is just to cute. anyway, he gives her this look like, give her what she wants lady!...I finaly had to take half a chicken because I didn't want to hold our meals up arguing with her!!  She didn't think I knew what I wanted I guess... anyway, I went off subject and the reason being so many people get this idea you will never eat again..sure you will!!!..just healthier and different portions.  I eat out a lot and never have a problem.. Dr. Sonnanstine and many other surgeosn don't do bowel preps so I am not really sure of the reason behind it..I have been in surgery many times with him and never saw a problem.. the liquid diet makes more sense but only because some docs want to shrink the liver...other docs who are trained laparoscopist don't seem to have a problem working around the liver..it's pulled up and out of the way by a liver retractor..but I have seen some big floppy ones..

anyway..again I want off..you will do just fine with a last meal..I had mine two nights before surgery..my fear was I didn't want to wake up with the pukes..blah!!

I guess I need to clarify a little bit more on this.  When I said a "big meal", I meant like going to a restaurant  and ordering a favorite meal (full portions) and maybe an appetizer.  I know I won't be able to eat that amount of food after surgery.  I, like everyone else, have had to go through a lot to get to this point of having the date for my surgery and lately I have been finding myself not able to eat the huge portions I use to eat.  I have been chewing my food more and eating more slowly. I actually have lost a few pounds and have not been trying.  I have found myself being more active about the house and yard.  I am so looking forward to 7/16 so much and starting my new life. Blessings to all!

Hi There! I have been thinking this question over and for the life of me don't have a answer. I KNOW I went out for a last meal, but I can't remember what the heck it was I ate! I know it was cold outside, and it was a Saturday night, because I had to start my liquids the next day. I remember getting ready, and leaving the house, but the rest is a blank! This is gonna bug the fire out of me until I remember. I sure do remember every minute though of the two days of liquid diet :-)

Hey Mamma0f2, My hubby and I did do a last meal. I was first in having my surgery, so we went to the Olive Garden. We're both pasta freaks and I knew it would be a good long while before I would have pasta. We ordered 2 different appetizers and I an order of a big plate of pasta.; I even ate off my hubby's plate. The thing is, while it sounds like I went crazy with all that food, truthfully, I didn't. I just a few bites off each item I wanted. I just wanted to taste a little of my favorites. My surgeon didn't threaten not to do surgery if I didn't lose weight. He encouraged me to lose some weight, for the liver reasons as well as for equipment usage if needed. (I was well over 400lbs. before surgery) I got down 11lbs. before surgery and that was with me trying real hard. If dieting was a successful tool for me  before surgery, then I wouldn't have needed the surgery. It's definitely about lifestyle changes, but I can see you realize that. It sounds as though you've already made those lifestyle changes and are well aware of what's to come. You sound committed and that commitment will bring success. I think going out for a meal that you like, because you know you won't be able to eat it for awhile later, is fine. In truth, it made each bite I took all the sweeter and my determination for success all the stronger. It's a tough road, this surgery, I assure you it's not easy to fight the head hunger. I struggle with food issues everyday, but have and do make good choices that will nourish my body properly. Last night I went to the Cracker Barrel and had the oven roasted turkey salad. Before the meal I had about 2oz of my hubby's tortilla soup and ate about 2oz of my turkey and half an egg. I chewed each bite thoroughly, tasting each bite before I swallowed. It's funny in a way, because the waitress last night asked me if my food was alright. I told her yes, and she said, "But you didn't eat!" I was very full by the time I finished. LoL There was a time I could have ate a bowl of tortilla soup, 2-3 biscuits, a whole salad, and one of their desserts. Impossible now...and you know what? It feels good. Good luck and please feel free to email me if you would like to talk-- Dee
