Xenical

Okay, yesterday was my last appointment for my 6 month physician followed program.  NOW my doctor said she wants to give me Xenical to try, IF I want to.  I do not know anything about this medication, except my insurance requires a prior authorization from the Dr. before it will pay, then I will have to pay 50.00 for the RX. My question is, if I get approval for surgery (paperwork was submitted today), should I even try this medication? What are the pros and cons? Anyone?  Thanks!

I was on xenical about 4years ago and lost about 70 lbs.  I am the exception to the rule.  I don't know anyone who has lost as much on it.  The Pro's are that it blocks  30% of the fat before your body absorbs it from each meal.  It dosen't make you jittery, dosen't curb your appitite, just blocks fat.  The Cons.....If you eat to much fat, you will poop your pants!!!   You have a very oily dicharge, and no more passing gas!!! You can't sneak one in!!  HAHA! I gained all my weight back after I stopped taking it due to my insurance not covering it anymore.  It was like $160 per month.  Couldn't afford that. You have to watch your fat intake all the time.  If you can do that it will work.  I hope this helps.

Oily discharges????????????????  From WHERE????   Never mind-I don't even want to know.  I'm going to hold out and see if insurance picks up surgery.  If it doesn't, THEN I may try it. But EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!

Hi Lisa, Here are my thoughts on the subject......and it's just my opinion....so take it as you will! I have spent a lot of time and effort becoming healthy through surgery but the surgery is only a tool.  It's up to me how I use this tool and I choose to use it to my advantage by eating healthy and exercising.   So my opinion is that you should skip the Xenical and just concentrate on eating healthy.  Once you're approved for surgery, you'll be that far ahead of the game.    Plus....I've heard the horror stories of Xenical.  We had a lady at work that took it for a while and we all knew that when she had that certain look on her face while hurrying through the office......we'd better get out of the way or she wouldn't make it to the bathroom in time.  That's certainly not how I'd want to live my life.   Again...it's just my opinion!
