Well, I just got back home on Friday and I never realized I would be so sore!! I am also having problems with protein and vitamins. The protein, as I understand, needs to be water based, does this mean it needs to be nectars or can I use my whey protein mixed with water instead of milk? I forgot to ask at the hospital. Also since I am on a clear liquid diet when I take my vitamins the leave me nauseated, I wonder if they will let me have something from the full liquid diet (anything!!), I'm going to speak with the nurse about that in the am. I have also been having alot of heartburn and reflux since surgery. I can't burp lying down or I'll reflux and my hearburn hurts across my collar bones. Does anyone have any tips? Is this normal? Thanks for listening.

HEY!!      I'm not sure about what your Dr. recommends but I didnt take vitamins until 2 weeks post-op.....as for protein, no mil****il 2 months out ...it will make your stomach hurt (it did mine) but my Dr. didnt reccomend milk products until 2 weeks out. as for protein right now...well the most important thing is to keep hydrated!!    lots of fluids!!!  DRINK DRINK DRINK!! and protein if you can as much as your Dr. says, i was able to get it down I did, protein soups, unjury added to ch****n broth and I made my hot coco from the whey protein with 8oz. water and a pinch of splenda and a diet hot choc. swiss miss, and was able to keep that down....though i didnt start the coco until the end of the first week or middle of 2nd.....and reflux ...normal for me!! i had it bad but it did go away as i got rid of the gas..and gas-x a wondr med!!!!      us it it works and it may take it a little bit but it works....and yes you should be able to take you vit. w/anything providing you keep it down!!      From Somerset??   ME too....well close I live just outside science hill !!   so hey neighbor!!   GOOD LUCK!!   Hope this helps....and if you have any Q's I can answer feel free!!! Hi and first off, congrats and welcome to the loser's side! Every doctor/office has a different program they want you to follow. The first thing I'd suggest is call tomorrow and get them to answer your questions. From a general standpoint, I can tell you I was never told to stay away from milk/dairy based products. The exception was it needed to be 2% or under. But, I'm lactose intolerant so milk is pretty much out for me anyway (what fun!) What kind of vitamins are you taking? Chewables may be easier on your new pouch. And you can space them over the day if taking all at once upsets your stomach.

I had to sleep propped up for the first week or so. But I was also still on my Bi-Pap machine which sometimes made the situation worse. Is it normal?  Just depends on your body and situation in the end. Call your doc and find out for sure. Good luck and see you around the boards! ~Kat

I'm on a chewable vit right now, which in itself almost makes me sick, I just hate the taste of it!! I was worried about the protein, they always said you needed to keep on top of your stores of it so you won't get deficient. Also my mom has read every wls manual there has ever been published, believe me this is both good and bad. Good that she understands what is happening and how to help but bad that she knows what is going to happen if I don't follow direction. I was going to call in and ask my few questions at the MD's office in the am. I just figured that there would be lots of tried and tested advice out there to handle some of this stuff. Thanks for responding!!! Also, if anyone has any good bariatric recipes or knows any books with any please let me know, I want to be prepared when I can eat food again ;>)..

Any protein that states it can be mixed with water, Crystal Light or fruit juice is acceptable for the first 7 days according to our program guidelines. I do not recommend advancing to stage 2 diet unless instructed to do so by surgeon's office.  Reflux following gastric bypass is not normal so you should call the office to be evaluated. 502.867.6744 Try taking your vitamins at the evening meal and see ift his helps with nausea. Keep inmind that by posting on this site, some of the replies may suggest  for you to do something that we wouldn't recommend as each surgeon has differant rules for their patients. We have a procedure specific support website for our gastric bypass patients which I monitor all day.  I am rarely on this site unless another patient directs me to a posting that is a G'Town patient.  You can email me for specifics on how to get on that website at:  [email protected] Cathi Roskind, RN The Bariatric Center at Georgetown

I am a nurse also so i know to never do something that the md does not tell you to do. I listen to  everyones comments and still wait to speak to my doc. I just think that some people have some really good ideas about how to do things, within what the doc tells us to do. But i really appreciate the worry about me!!!!!
