Blood clots????????????
Ok I am so getting ready for my surgery on the 8th of August...
..........YAY................ But I have been hearing alot about blood clots. I have had to have a bunch of surgeries in the past. Really about 8 in the last 5 years.... I have never had any problems with blood clots.......NEVER.......... soooo what would be the chances of me having blood clots with the gastric bypass surgery??????
I know I will be laid up
for a little while...but my colon ruptured back in 2002 and I had to have an emergency surgery and they cut my stomach from above my navel all the way down. I had to wear a colostmy bag for about 3 months. After the surgery they had to leave me open to heal and so I was really laid up for about the whole 3 months. I never had a problem with blood clots. Does anybody think that I would have any problems with blood clots now??????? Just wanted to know others opinions.
Thanks All
Cindy

They usually talk about the clot thing in depth at the seminars. I know Dr Shina did more at his then the one I went to tonight.
I wouldnt begin to know how to guess on the possibility of getting a clot.
I know I was said to have a higher risk, not only cause of the obesity but because I smoked for manyyyy years before and when I was younger got superfical clots while on birth control pills.
Guess this would be a great question for the surgeon....
Good luck!!

Just a lil note to warn all pre and post ops. GET YOUR PROTEIN IN EVERYDAY!!! I have done rather crappy with mine since day 1 and I am paying dearly with VERY slow weight loss, major hair loss, and all out feelin like shit! PLEASE!!!! Follow your program's rules!!
hello there & dnt be scared at all when I had my surgery they put the things on your legs to stop blood clots & they also give you a shot in your tummy or they did me any way but the night you have surgery you are walking & it felt good to walk to get the gasses out of your tummy so walk alot even if it is baby steps ,

When I had my revision in June by Dr. Geller (Who is your Dr.?) they put those inflatable things on my legs, gave me shots of blood thinner (fragmin) in my stomach, and had me give myself injections of fragmin for 10 days after the surgery. That's why walking immediately after surgery is so important. There are two major risks with any surgery that they try to avoid and that's blood clots and pneumonia. That's why they have you walk , cough, and use the spirometer as much as possible. You should be fine doing all those things.........
What you believe, you can achieve!!
Hi there,
I was nervous about all the talk with the blood clots as well, and as Joy (previous post and wonderul person) said Dr Shina goes over it in depth about blood clots, I made a decision to have a filter put in and as of yesterday I have a new Vena Cava Filter....my day yesterday could not have went any better, the staff at Baptisit east are WONDERFUL. I was awake through the whole surgery...I would do it all over again if I had to.
Good luck, my surgery is friday so please send prayers my way...and I will do the same for you.
Missy
Hello Missy, I was wondering how do you go about having the Vena Cava Filter put in? Dr Shina is my doc too, he told me the day of the seminar that I could have it if I wanted it but I have never heard anything more about it, I have went to every doc appt they set up, do I have to ask them about this or do they set you up an appointment? thanx

I was one of the few that ended up with a clot in my right leg. I knew what it was from the pain, redness and swelling so when I called in, they scheduled a scan.
I was given pills to take for a couple of months and everything was fine. So just because you may get a clot, it doesn't have to be serious. They can be, don't get me wrong, but they can also just be painful and something to work through.
I also got a stricture, twice... another thing to just work through and get fixed.
I started at 370. Today I am at 202....heading for a goal of 170
