Possible obstruction: What to do?
So far I haven't had any major complications since my RNY surgery, and I'm almost 7 months post-op. But all of a sudden today, I am not feeling well. It started just before noon today. I ate about 3 oz. of hamburger meat and pickles. (Yes, that's odd, but I chew it well, and it always goes down fine.) About 2 hours later, I started feeling pain gradually more and more. It was definitely in the stomach region, and it was so bad that all I could do was curl up on the couch in pain. About an hour later, it faded away.
Then, a while later, I decided to eat some yogurt. No immediate pain or anything, but just like the last time, the pain came back, and here I am, 2 hours later again, and it still hurts. The best way to describe it is, I feel like I've done 1,000 crunches or something. It's sore like that. So I drank some SF cappuccino (hot liquid) hoping that would flush things out, and all it did was make a bunch of gurgling noises.
HELP HELP HELP!
I dont know what this is, and I dont want to go to the ER for no reason. I mean, if it still hurts in the morning I will go, but has anyone had this experience before? Could it be an obstruction or is it possible that this could be caused by an ulcer or something? I dont know what to do.
if the pain doesn't go away of course you should be checked out. I am not one to head to the ER for a couple of reasons..I worry that they have no idea what's happening with a WLS patient. And I only want a bariatric doc to see me..
My suggestion would be to call your docs office, I would imagine just as in the case of Dr. Sonnanstine (that's who I call if and when I have a problem) there is a weekend and evening pager number where I can contact him..he calls back and always gives his patients advice. I am not going to say you should wait until tomorrow, but if the pain does subside and only hurts when you eat, I would suggest taking in liquids until the AM when you can call his office. I am sure your surgeon will want to check you out. There are other reasons besides strictures that cause pain, such as, ulcers,...
Take it easy this evening with your intake..then of course share with us what happens later...we learn from everyones experience..
Brenda
Thank you Brenda. I was totally prepared to call my doc, but a couple hours after I posted this, the pain went away. I just kept drinking hot liquids, and I finally forced myself to lay flat on the bed, and I took an hour long nap. When I woke up, the pain was gone.
Today I'm back to normal. Eating & feeling great again! Thank you for the advice, though. I was panicking yesterday.
You know the other thing I was thinking.....I once got a piece of steak caught in my pouch...oooo my gawd it hurt. I thought I would have to go to the ER to get them to fi**** out. How embarrassing would that be? lol But finally after small sips and lots of them it passed on down..I can tell you I never did that again..sometimes we think we chewed it up ..but it gets stuck anyway.
Glad you are feeling better..take care
