Self Pay??

 Hi everyone!

I've never posted here before.  I've been trying to get Lap RNY for quite some time now.  It seems like no job I've had in the passed 3 years covers it, and self pay has never been an option for me until now and I was wanting to know how much I might expect to pay in KY and if you have to pay everything all at once, or if anyone has an general advice about self pay for me.

I intend to call around to ask questions from the actual surgeons offices, but it's the weekend so I'll be waiting until next week and I figured it can't hurt to hear from people that have already gone through it.

I also wanted to ask if anyone has had surgery through Right Weigh (http://www.rightweigh.com/) in Louisville and if they're legit/a good place/whatever because they claim to charge $20k and for it to be all inclusive.

Thanks in advance!

I'm a self pay but mine was a bypass. The group I used has a fee breakdown of around $21,000 but add in some pre-op testing and the total will be closer to $23,000. There are some finance options available through the band manufacturers. The group you choose should be able to put you in contact with them. Can't comment on the group you mentioned but I'm sure someone here will have heard of them. Check for reviews here as well.
Good luck,
Jim

I have never heard of rightweigh....I looked @ the website but couldn't find any surgeons' names listed, which makes me sort of suspicious.  In Louisville there are several different groups of doctors that do the lapband. (I am not as sure about the RNY but many bariatric surgeons do both procedures) I used Norton Bariatrics, but my insurance paid for it.  Dr. Vincent Lusco is another excellent doctor who a friend of mine used who only takes self pay patients.  Check around & compare prices.....Dr. Lusco may be your best bet since he only takes self pay patients (he used to take insurance but according to my friend he has only done self pays for bout 2 years now).  Good luck! You are looking at the right place for into & support!

RIGHTWEIGHT.COM IS Dr.Shina and use to be Dr. Gellar... It is for real. I promise.. I just got a email from them about self pay options but I deleted it... I thought the self pay lapband was 12000.00 but no idea about the gastric.. sorry...
You can email them and they will send you info.. Dr. Shina is suppose to be the top gastric bypass surgeon... if you read his obesity help profile, it will give you some info...
 Good luck...

Hi Kala (beautiful name btw)

I just saw an ad here on OH from http://www.thebariatricgroup.com it is an american owned hospital.. according to the ad.
You can get free airfare as long as you mention Obesity Help. The self pay for the surgeries are as follows:

Lapband- $6,500
Gastric Sleeve- $9,500
RNY Gastric Bypass- $11,500

They didn't mention Duodenal Switch though.. dunno if you're even interested in going that route but I would definitely research it.. It appears to be an even better surgery than RNY if you have a lot of weight to lose. I've read that it cures Type 2 diabetes ...I don't believe I've ever read about a DS'er who is gaining back weight on the Grads board but you see a lot of lapbands and RNYers who are. (I wish someone would've told me this before I had surgery lol)

Anyway, Good Luck!

If you had lab band or RnY and are gaining or have already gained back a lot of weight, consider a revisio to a DS, the surefire way to get your weight off and keep it off. So many are getting revisions to DS. Or better yet, get the DS the first time around, remember "cut once" and you will be beter off, but I am a revisions and I am so determined to get my life back, I am willing to do it again. I wish everyone luck.

 Hello A Radical.

Love the name.

Just to let you know that I work with Dr. Husted so naturally I am biased.
If money is your only concern then by all means you should look into the place that was posted above. I don't think anyone said where it was but clearly it is out of the country.

Personally, I would be too frightened to do that but some people do it and have really great results.

Dr. Husted is now in Kentucky and he does all of the surgeries, including the D/S and revisions.

Whatever you do, please make sure you are familiar with all of your options.
So many of our patients are revision patients because they were never informed that there were surgeries available to them that were different from what their doctor offered.

A_Radical says she is trying to get the Lap RNY... that is a gastric bypass, laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass.

Rightweigh has been around since the late 90's at least... I originally tried to get surgery with Dr. Shina (one of the ORIGINAL RNY surgeons in KY) but my insurance has an exclusion and has never paid for the procedure and I am still waiting for the chance one day to get it.  I have actually had several insurance policies over the years, they all had exclusions.

The Rightweigh staff works with Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville... fine group of people.  Dr. Shina is often criticized for a lack of bedside manner... he is very blunt and honest... which is what you want when its something as serious as this.  Let the humor lay with the attending staff.
