Newbie....waiting and worried

Hello, I've been around for a couple months now lurking around in the forums.  I started my WLS journey in April with Dr. Shina's seminar.  I have KY Medicaid, so I had to do the 6 month diet thing which I have completed.  I had to see all the doctor's for clearances before it could be submitted to my insurance, which I finally completed on Monday.  This has been a long, long process!!!  But I know it will be worth it in the end.  Dr. Shina's office should have submitted to my insurance asking for approval this week, so hopefully I'll hear something soon....Anyone else know how long Medicaid takes???  I'm having RNY.....

Now that surgery is getting closer, I'm scared to death....My biggest fear is not waking up from the surgery....My second fear is blood clots, but I'm having the filter so that doesn't worry me that much now...After reading all the posts and stuff of people that are far out from surgery, I find myself worried that I'll have other health problems, like strictures, hernias, bowel obstructions, osteoporosis....Will I benefit from having WLS considering all of this????  Also, my family is scared to death that something is gonna happen because I always have bad luck....Am I crazy or is all these feelings normal????  HELP......

WHat made you decide to go the RNY route?

Good luck, You'll go through tons of different emotions...fear, excited, scared, etc..etc...

Thanks for the replies.....Well, I was recommended to Dr. Shina and he only does Lapband or RNY....I don't really know much about the DS or the Sleeve, except for what I've read on here....I just pray that I make it thru the surgery....I've never been put to sleep or had any type of surgery, so I guess I don't know what it's like....

((( Joan ))), all those feelings you mentioned are normal and the closer you get to surgery, the more they will probably weigh on your mind.  Surely your surgeon would not operate unless he knows you are a good candidate for WLS- that's what all those tests are for. The alternative is not appealing, so find that place within yourself that you KNOW you are in good hands and good to go!  Wishing you the Best!!!

Joan....your feelings are normal. Very normal. Have you looked into the track records for Dr Shina? Did you pick him because of Medicaid? Dr Allen and the USA group take it as well. That is how I picked my Dr. I talked to his patients and got their feeback. I watched the boards and comments or problems his patients had (or didn't have). Some of your concerns may stem from lack of confidence within your decisions on surgeons. They should take away most of those..not all...but most. I had to have alot of faith and trust put into my Dr since he was the one doing the cutting. Just my opinion.

I was a Dr. Shina patient too until I discovered the DS and what it would do for me.  I switched before Dr. Husted moved to KY so I had to travel to Indy for my surgery but it was worth it all.  Sounds like you haven't made up your mind yet.  No harm in that, attend some support groups and meet some real people who live with their surgeries, make an informed decision and you'll be more comfortable.  I visited the revisions board here on OH and read alot before I made up my mind too, researched my surgeons track record and searched medical journals for information.  Your other posts make it seem like you are looking hard at the DS, so I suggest you meet with the KY DS group and go to duodenalswitch.com for more information.  If you want to talk by PM I will be happy to do so.
I owed it to myself to research the duodenal switch before consenting to any other weight loss surgery and so do you.  Check out DSFacts.com and DuodenalSwitch.com for more information.  Remember think twice, cut once, revisions are risky and revision surgeons are rare.
