Hi, my name is DeAnn and I have Bipolar. Before surgery I was on lithium and effexor not to mention other drugs. Since surgery I no longer take the lithium. I had to have liquid lithium after surgery---could not choke it down! I have gone from 400mg of effexor a day to 37.5 daily. My psychiatrist also supported my surgery. I have had no manic episodes and it has been 5 months since my surgery. I no longer see my dr monthly--only as needed or bi-yearly. My doctor performed a physical surgery but seems to have cured my mental problems. After losing 86lbs I feel great mentally and physically. Good luck to you!!!!!!!!!!

Deeann, I'm glad things have gone well for you post surgery. My friend found eventually she had to go back to her meds. The key is to work closely with your surgeon and psychiatrist to make your body can metabolize the dosages you are taking. She is now doing wonderful!

I am a post-op with bi-polar. I had to have a presurgery psych eval that included investigating my bi-polar. I don't think the fact that I had bi-polar affected wether I was approved or not. However the psych evaluator told me I was not a good canidate because I did not have a good support system and that my family had not supported me thus far in my life and they were unlikely to support me after surgery. He was right. I wish I had not had the surgery and would beg anyone considering the surgery to not go through with it.
