Hello everyone, I home from the hospital and I need some help. I don't know what to eat. They put such a fear in me about the dumping sydrome, that I'm scared to eat anything. Where do I get sugar free pop-cicles? Everything I see says "no sugar added" but when you look on the label there is sugar in it. Also, what exactly does dumping syndrome feel like. I know what the paper says, but truthfully i feel lightheaded a lot of the time and everything runs through me. Can anyone help? Thanks Deanna

Deanna, you should be able to get sugar free popsicles in any grocery store. They will say sugar free and on the back will show 0 calories. I know our Kroger and Food Lion have them. If you are dumping, I think you'd know it. I'm pre-op, but from what I understand there is a lot of pain, nauseousness, sometimes vomitting, sweating, chills, etc. It's something that once you experience it, you'll do just about anything to not go through it again! Just don't forgo your protien for fear of dumping. Do you have protein drinks? So soon after surgery I would think that anything you ate should provide some of your protein needs, as it's usually difficult to get much in that soon post-op. Good luck to you!

Hi Deanna, First I would like to say congrats on your surgery! It is a big step and a big change. About the eating, Did the nurses give you any suggestions or maybe a list about what to eat at certain stages of your recovery? This will help you out a lot. If I remember correctly, I had lots of SF popcicles and chicken broth and sipped water all day the 1st several weeks. Don't be so scared about the whole dumping thing...just avoid any sugars right now and when you are in the stage that you can bring in new foods you will find a level of sugar that you will be able to tolerate without dumping. I found out that I can tolerate around 15-18g of sugar at one time without getting sick, people can handle different amounts. I know some people that dont dump at all. Actually Ive not dumped on sugar- but did on eating a few bites of biscut and gravy- (Because I ate them before I was in the stage to eat them). So see its just as important to know what stage your in as knowing how many grams of sugar your eating. ...You do need to get a list of things you are able to eat at certain stages and just try not to even think about the sugar thing. (just avoid them for now) Call the office that did your surgery they should help you out. I hope this helps- I don't want you to be scared. The dr;s office is a great resource...and they should have ALL the information that you need. Again CONGRATS on you new start! Lee

Deanna I just got home last Tuesday and I have eaten chickenbroth with chicken chopped up real small , cottage cheese with a slice of peach, yogurt, jello with cool whip, oh and what I find really good is an egg with mexican cheese. Just eat slowly and chew and don't overeat. Iv also drank the protien drink. and have had skim milk daily. If im doing something wrong someone please tell me fast. I don't want to screw up. Iv been feeling really good and only use the pain pills at night and no gas and good bms so far.Today I went out for lunh and had onion soup and the cheese on the top not the croutons and didn't eat it all.

Deanna, did your doctor's office not give you a specific diet to follow when you got home?????????? Keep looking for SUGAR FREE popsicles. They are there...I have found them at Walmart, krogers, Meijers, etc. You need to have a specific post op diet to go by. Programs vary but I was on liquids, broths, protein shakes (this is VITAL!!!) for almost a month, then moved on to soft foods, like cottage cheese, etc...yogurts... I never eat anything with more than 5 or 7 grams of sugar. EVER. That's just my own rule of thumb. You need to call your doctor's office and get someone there to help you. if they won't, email me and I will get you a copy of our post op plan. The important thing is to VERY gradually take in different food textures. do NOT push tthis part of it. Your pouch is healing and it needs to be babied. Secondly......PLEASE tell me you are drinking your protein. It is imperative that you be getting in at a MINIMUM of 70 grams of protein supplements a day. Try the Nectar's...Roadside Lemonade or Fuzzy Navel......35 grams at a time max. So, two shakes a day. OK? Let us know how you're doing, Kat
