Duodenal Switch???
What is a Duodenal Switch and how is it different from having either Open or Lap RNY? I am going to Dr. Shina on Oct 5th for my seminar and consult. I was jus****ching DiscoveryHealth and saw a story on a lady named Kathy from TN who had this Duodenal Switch and after reading her profile I was thinking, hmm, what is this Duodenal Switch and does Dr. Shina do it??? Email me at [email protected]. Thanks.
The duodenal switch is a modification of the biliopancreatic diversion. It is a moderate restrictive procedure and has a longer malabsorptive component than the RNY. The malabsorptive component can be more of an issue than RNY and close follow up and careful vitamin and protein supplementation are required. Patients seem to like it more because they can eat more volume and still lose weight. Unfortunately you malabsorb fat content in food and this can lead to quite severe malordorous stools. It has not gained universal application and early indications suggest better weight loss in persons who are super obese (BMI > 50). It can be performed laparoscopically but few surgeons offer this approach. As with gastric bypass most surgeons still perform it open. The risks of leak and mortality are also slightly higher than RNY. Investigate carefully. Good Luck.
Sincerely,
Dr. Selwyn
