OT:Wanted: A puppy!!! :)
My hubby and I are looking to expand our family as we are moving to the country to a new house that has a enormous yard. We have 3 inside kittens and would like a puppy for the outside. Well, he/she may end up inside  Any of these breeds are fine, male or female: german shepherd, alaskan malamute, or golden retriever. Mix breeds are also fine. I have been looking in the free Items of the paper but haven't seen anything as of yet. I plan on going to the pound soon as we get moved (that will be within a weeks time). Thanks also any advice on puppies appreciated!

Have you checked at Petsmart? they have adoption clinics and you get a spayed/neutered animal at very low cost. Lots of pet stores have programs like this...or you can call the Shamrock Society...they may have one.
I cant really help w/ the puppy...but I have 2 kittens that need homes, if anyone wants them.

Professionally, I work with dogs that have extreme behavior problems (referred to me by their vet, typically) but one of the things I often find myself doing is helping past clients evaluate litters of puppies or adult prospects to pick their next dog so they can avoid having to bring another dog to me in the future.
Woodford Co HS is very nice, though I'm not positive they will adopt to people very far from their area. I typically suggest people in E-Town go to the Louisville Humane Society. They have an excellent behavior specialist on staff and I've been very impressed with their evaluation results these past two years or so. They have so many more animals than space that any they keep for adoption are very good bets. If you are serious about a purebred, you might try looking online for the breed rescue organization. For example, the Golden people have a VERY active regional rescue. Dogs from breed rescue are usually kept in foster homes until they are adopted by people who know a lot about the breed. It is an excellent way to get a dog.
What ever you do, please be wary of backyard breeders (who may be well-meaning but don't do the genetic testing necessary for ALL the breeds you listed and who don't know how to correctly raise a litter of puppies-it's more work than people realize) as well as puppymill bred dogs. If you buy a puppy, look for CH parents (AKC, NOT CKC) and not just "CH bloodlines" which can mean anything. Parents should have OFA numbers, thyroid certificates, and CERF (eye) exams by a specialist. Responsible breeders sell their puppies with a written contract that specifies their health guarantees as well as what they expect from you. They ask a lot of questions and don't just hand a puppy over to anyone who brings them a check. They do home-checks and ask for references. There are plenty of puppies destroyed every day in this country. To breed dogs without holding one's self to the highest standards is irresponsible. Be VERY careful who you buy a puppy from.
If I can help, let me know.

Kristina

Well, if they are still young and cuddly, you might consider the Louisville Humane Society. There are tons of kittens in the spring, but as summer moves along they have fewer and fewer. The times I have been in the cat area in the summer they have had some empty cages. Also, the Shamrock Society in Louisville can help perhaps, they place a lot of cats. Otherwise, my advice is to post a sign at the vet's office where you have been taking them for shots and such. If the people in the office have met the kittens and can vouch they are well taken care of and sweet, people-oriented babies, they will often suggest them to clients.
Hope that helps a little!

Kristina
Angela,
Try going to www.petfinder.com and looking in the classifieds (click your state) and you may be surprised at some of the great animals up for adoption. This is a great site for finding a forever friend.
