Dr. Bolar
A friend of mine had a bad experience with him. She went to the initial consultation and was treated very badly by him. She left the office sobbing (no exaggeration) and started looking for another surgeon. She ended up going to Dr. Steiner and because of her exceptional experience with him, I chose him, too. There is no finer doctor and I could not have been happier with my choice.
As a side note, before I knew about my friend's experience, I had emailed Dr. Bolar to ask if he would do my surgery. Because of my personal beliefs, I was told quite abruptly that he would not do my surgery.
Dr. Steiner not only respected my beliefs, but also made sure that everyone who worked with me did so, as well. His knowledge, skill and expertise in this field saved my life when I had complications after surgery. I know that I made the best choice that I possibly could have.

I had a meeting with Dr. Bolar, I liked him, but I did not want an open Rny.
I decided on Dr. Weiss and Oldham out at Georgetown. So happy I did, not only do they have better numbers for sucess, I also like the size of the pouch. Dr. Bolar is better known for open incisions.

Dr. Bolar did my surgery 7/24/02 in Georgetown. I absolutely love Dr. Bolar. He was very caring, kind, and asnwered any and all questions thoroughly. Rright before my surgerystarted, I was almost sobbing on the OR table, I was absolutely scared out of my mind!! Dr. Bolar came in and patted my face, talked to me, and told me that everything was going to be fine. I'm sure that I made the right choice for my surgeon and would do it again in a heartbeat!!

I had Dr. Bolar for my surgery and I truly feel he is an excellent surgeon. I say this having had complications (most serious: post-operative bleeding and dehydration). I don't know if I would have survived if Dr. Bolar and the ICU nurses at Samaritan Hospital had not been taking care of me.
I have had other health issues come up post-op (nothing related to Dr. Bolar's skills or expertise), and he has been so helpful in getting things taken care of. You are given his home phone number before being discharged and he had to deal with me a lot after surgery.
I also like his "bedside manner" and I think he truly cares about his patients.
His office staff have always been helpful and gone above and beyond. His nutritionist is great too. I have not been able to participate in his post-op support group much but that is completely my fault. They meet once a month and it always seems I'm headed out of town.
That said, it would not hurt to get more than one consultation. Everyone has a different perception of the surgeon they meet. I'm sorry that the other poster's friend had such a bad experience. I did some stupid stuff and thought Dr. Bolar would be very angry with me, but he has been nothing but supportive, informative and professional. I worked in healthcare for 10 years and wish I had known of even one other surgeon like Dr. Bolar.
Good Luck.
