They told one of my girlfriends the same thing. They explained to her that if she was smoking it would be that much harder on her body in recovery, etc. I don't know of a doc in KY that lets you smoke before surgery.
I know its hard. I quit as well, but I had to put myself in the mindset of "why have surgery to save my life if I was just going to keep killing myself one cigarette at a time?"
I also picked a goal. Don't know if this will help you or not but my goal was to climb the lighthouse in St Ajugustine FL.
My son had been wanting to go the past couple of years each time we had been down there. I told him last summer that by golly we were gonna do it! So, everytime I thought about smoking I pictured myself climbing 237 steps up this lighthouse! It really helped me to visualize that. Now, I am not saying I did not cheat here and there. I did, its HARD to quit, but I did it, and you can too!
Tina,
I know you are upset. But, I don't know of any Dr. that would knowingly operate unless it was an emergency knowing their patient was smoking. Healing is not as good with a smoker. I know it will be hard but, if you can work on the smoking for the next 3 months, you will improve your overall health and chances of survival.

no need to be upset at dr. steiner and it doesn't sound lie you are. i am sure he told you right up front that he wouldn't operate on you if you smoke. he did me. I had been quit for three eyars already tho. However, I did start back about a year after surgery. I have had multiple ulcers in different places and he never fussed at me until the last one. i called him crying with pain and wanted to go into the office to see him. he asked on the phone if i was still smoking and when I said yes, he asked me to meet him at the hospital the next day for a scope. it showed a new ulcer. he more or less ordered me to stop smoking. he said he is seeing more ulcers in his patients that start back and most of them are requiring surgery to fic it. i don't want another surgery. i think I have had three or four since my WLS. There are VERY good reasons to stop smoking before surgery. i know it is hard but you have to decide what you want most. No doctor is going to operate on you if you tell the truth About smoking so you are wasting your time "doctor shopping". Just be glad that he has your best interest at heart and is concerned about your safety.
It gets easier from here.... After 3 days, you are no longer PHYSICALLY addicted to cigarettes. The psychological "need" for it is still there, but not the physical one. You've already gotten rid of the nicotine in your body... that takes 3 days.
At this point, your body is already healing itself. Your circulation is improving, the temperature of your hands and feet are returning to normal. Your O2 and CO levels have normalized. Already, your chances of a heart attack have decreased. The nerve endings in your nose and mouth have begun to regrow, your lungs are starting to get rid of the excess mucus and your senses of smell and taste are getting better. Why stop there? In another week and 1/2, your lung function will increase by as much as 30%!
When you feel a craving come on, take a deep breath and drink some water. You'll feel better after a few minutes. So far, I'm 1 month, 6 days and 3 hours smoke-free. I've saved almost $100. Yes, I get cravings, but they are fewer and more far between than they were a month ago.
You can do it. It's a tough road, but it's worth it!
