I have been approved for a gastric bypass but I received a letter today that I was NOT approved fot a Q pain pump. What is this? My insurance said it wasn't a medical necessity. Has anybody used this pump? What was the results? I go to Georgetown fri.

I am not too sure what that is. I had Open RNY 11 months ago and had a demoral pump, had some sort of novacaine ball attached to my insicision and the pain wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be with the open. Which are u having? Open or Lap? Angela

I'm having a lap. I think it must be something like that so I can get more meds in my system if I need it. I've got a high pain threashold (married w/children!) so guess I'll get through it. Thanks for the reply.

Hi all..if I may...a few surgeons use the Q pain pump but not many..lap patients don't really need it..it's acutally this little balloon looking thing that goes inside the incision..slowly pain meds are let out into your system helping with the pain management..until the balloon is deflated of the meds then they remove it..(ok not a very technical way of describing it but I hope you can understand what I am trying to explain) I asked Dr. Sonnanstine (Florence, KY) and I asked Dr's Weiss and Oldham (Georgetown)what they think of the pain pump and I got the same answer...they can't prove that it really works, and for the price they don't feel it's worth it..this of course coming from surgeons who do laparoscopic and not open.. HOwever, I do know that many plastic surgeons use the pain pump..I am all for that.!! give me anything that even makes me feel like I might not hurt!! LOL

by the way ..I was just thinking..I bet these docs only told me that because my insurance won't pay for it either..they were trying to make me feel better. I know Dr. Sonnanstine doesn't use them. Not totally sure about the Georgetown docs. I will see Dr. Oldham tomorrow and if my tiny brain can remember I will ask him that question. then post his answer tomorrow night. I know of two people who has the plastics..they said it worked for them..I told the two plastics I talked to that IF i chose them I want the pain pump!! Brenda

When I had my surgery in 2004 Drs. Weiss and Oldham did use the on-q pain pump. As far as I know they still use it.

It's hard to remember my band surgery since it was over a year and a half ago, but I had 2 when I had my plastics and I had a VERY easy time after it.
