How far in advance did you give your job notice that you would be out? Its not noted in my companies handbook and i plan on taking std. And when i went I asked someone in HR they didnt know. reguardless if i give my boss two weeks or a month notice she still is going to be upset.

Since I was confident that getting insurance approval was not an issue, I told my job when I had completed about 1/2 of my pre-testing.  So, I alerted them in April.  In late May, I received a surgery date of 7/2/07.  I am the one person that can handle my duties at work (no backup, no assistant), so I needed to alert them to my absence and make preparations to be out.  I work for the federal govt, so I wasn't worried about anyone getting mad or "denying" my leave request.  Good luck!

I gave my job notice as soon as I had my date, which was just about 6 weeks. My boss picked up my day to day duties while I was out, and there were no issues. I planned on taking 10 days off, and that was all I needed. However, I was up front with them and told them I might need as much as 4 weeks. I had no problems! They did require me to request FMLA, but the surgeons office mailed me that paperwork automatically, so overall it was quite simple. If your HR department doesn't know, then your company most likely doesn't have a policy. What do they usually require as notice for vacation requests? Perhaps that is a good guideline to go on. You will most likely get a surgery date 4-6 weeks out, which should be more than enough notice. Just because your boss doesn't want to do more work, doesn't mean you should worry about it! You are doing everything you can to get her notice as far in advance as you can.
Hugs!

I told them my date as soon as I had it. I also infromed them all along that I would be having the surgery. No surprises.

About half way thru my six months period, I told my co-workers (only the ones who would directly effected) and then told my boss about 3 months ago. When I got my surgery date, I called HR and found out what I needed to do as far as short term disability.  I also told my boss that I had finally gotten the date.   My boss is supportive (he's better be!  I do a lot of extra work for him) so he has no problem.  I was able to get coverage from other close co-workers so that everything is okay. I let my job know as soon as I was approved cause from there things went really really really fast.  Tell her now  and so be it, let her be upset.  This is something you must do for you and your health. Hugs Kristen

I am going to have a talk with my boss on tuesday she is off monday. Monday someone from my doctors office is going to call me to schdule my surgey date. The only reason why i havent talked to her about this before is she is strongly against the surgery. She was interested in this two years ago before her husband talked her out of it. So when ever the subject is brought up she has something negative to say. hopefully when she see how great it works out with me she might change her mind. but if she doesnt o well.

Good luck having the talk with your supervisor.  I agree it's best to be up front about the time off needed, but i don't necessarily think everyone at work has a right to know what type of surgery you are having.  We have a right to privacy.  But if you feel you can confide in your colleagues or supervisior about your WLS than go ahead and get it over with so you won't be stressing about it.  Just remember that your supervisor's own personal issues with WLS have nothing to do with you and your decision to have it.  She needs to deal with your decision to have surgery and apply for medical leave with professionalism and leave her own baggage out of it.  If she tries to talk you out of it or oversteps the boundaries in any way, just remember...It's your health, your decision alone,  and is between you and your doctor.
