I have seen them work, my sister is married to a man with whom she had a long distance relationship with for years prior to her engagement, so I have to say yes. BUT for ME, I'd had to say no, unless my man was a saint and did all the traveling and work involved to keep it burning... talk about doing anything for love...

I think it depends on personalities. I was active duty military for 15 years and had LDRs. I found that I needed the face to face part to feel "attached". It is very different now since I am re-married and older. Our children are adults and we can sustain ourselves independent of the other.
