Sleep Study ** CPAP ***

Last night I went and had my follow up sleep study with the actual Cpap machine.  The only reason I went for the study was becasuse Dr. "S" ordered it as one of my pre-op tests.  Turns out I had a mild case, I say mild because I know other people with much worse.  However, I do sleep so awful and have issues with falling a sleep during the day that I decided that maybe this was a good thing I found out and follow through with it.  Of course last night I didn't feel like I was sleeping much and the face mask made me feel a lot claustrophobic at first but I made it through and I'm waiting to see how I feel later this afternoon.

How many of you had to do a sleep study and how many followed through and still use the CPAP?

PS....Good Morning!

I had a sleep study as a part of my pre-op too.  Found out I have sleep apnea.  I have a C-PAP machine, but haven't used it much.  I don't have a face mask.  I don't know if you would call it a mask, as it only fits inside my nostrils.  I've slept on average about 4 hours with it at night.  It dries my nose and throat out.  It has a humidifier on it, but it hasn't done much good.  I'm going to try to be compliant and use it nightly as directed.

I had my sleep study done and they said I have a mild sleep apnea, and i had to go back and do the sleep study using the cpap machine.  I hated it, but I got through it.  On Monday they delivered my cpap, but I haven't used it yet.  During my sleep study I used the nasal pillow mask, but when she came to the house I found the mask that covers the nose was easier to breathe with.  It wasn't such a huge force of air, and it was actually comfortable.  I am going to use it this weekend to see if it helps me, but I know me and I won't be using it like I'm supposed to.  Good luck with yours.

Hi Becki and Sharmal ~

That's exactly what I told myself...I had to get through this for the WLS.  Then I got to thinking that I hope it helps me because I'm not rested 99% of the time.  I've got other issues, RLS and seriously bad knees so sleeping is fretful for me.

I'm sorry to hear that the nasal one didn't work for you because I was hoping that one wouldn't make me feel so freakish.  I'm not sure I can lay next to my husband with that face mask one. LMAO...course he won't notice...I looked like some kind of outter space alien when I saw myself in the mirror when I got up the one time during the night.  I will say this.  It was the first time I can remember, in my life, that I slept with my mouth shut all night.

LOL keeping my mouth shut was the hardest part for me.  I like the nasal one because it is a lot less on your face, but I choose the mask to get used to the air pressure.  She told me that I can switch to the nasal one at anytime to just give them a call and they will send it out.  My son thought I was hurt when he saw it on me lol the poor thing.  I hope when I use it this weekend that it helps me get a better nights sleep.  Good luck with yours!

I  had a sleep study as part of preop testing and hated every minute of it also! It was horrible. Luckily though I did not have sleep apnea and so did not have to wear a c-pap at all or get retested. Like others said just check it off on your list of testing and it seems like progess and getting one step closer!!

my doc also requires a sleep study and i also found out that i had apnea that i did not know that i had.  however, i was not put on the c-pap because i was about to undergo surgery and many apnea patients are taken off the c-pap as a result of the surgery.  glad it turned out that way because i am positive that i no longer have apnea.  i'm sleeping better than ever and my husband said that snoring is extremely diminished.

I was diagnosed way before I even decided to have the surgery and wore a C-PAP until about 3 months ago.  The pressure is too strong now and needs to be adjusted, but I don't want to have another sleep study since I am still losing weight, it will just change again.

My H also has sleep apnea and wears a C-PAP. He was diagnosed a couple years before me.

We both found that our quality of sleep improved drastically with the C-PAPs and that we were less tired.  I sleep like **** now.  But wearing the mask just fills my belly with air, which then has to come out somewhere, which then wakes me up constantly.  I do miss it though.

I wore the full face mask that covered both my nose and mouth.  I wasn't able to keep my  mouth closed and breath right with the one that just covered my nose.

I have used a CPAP for almost 2 years prior to my surgery (just last week).  I am no so used to it that I actually cannot sleep without it.  My sleep MD plans to put me on a machine that the pressure can auto adjust so as I lose weight and need less pressure, I do not need to go in for many sleep studies.  Maybe just one later on to confirm I no longer need the machine (fingers crossed).

I have one too and while it's bulky etc I feel a lot better on it then off it. The only times I haven't worn it is when I have a cold and can't breathe thru my nose. I don't have the ramp turned on mine though cause it feels like I'm not getting enough air. So I just have the air full blast from the get go. I'm hoping I can switch to one of the automatic machines and then get completely off of it eventually. The weird thing is that my husband and son say I don't snore- I just got tested because i was tired and my blood pressure started going up. My PCP thinks that I wasn't getting enough oxygen at night...

Oh and I wear the mask that just goes over my nose.
