hey sweetheart!  If you swallow gum, you should be fine.  Gum usually STICKS to dry surfaces but you can be rest assured that that gum is fully covered is saliva, and whatever is down there in that pouch that will allow it to pass through.  I'll never forget the first time I swallowed gum....I was so scared and then.....nothing at all LOL  Once it gets to where your intestines meet up again where your digestive juices are flowing, that gum is history.  the REAL reason that they don't want us to chew gum anymore is that it could cause old snack habits to rise to the surface that we're trying to keep from doing.

I guess all of that coffee I drank helped to wa**** down.  Is it really true that they(surgeons) are just trying to scare us into better eating habits? I had heard that gum can get stuck and then it becomes serious. Also that the chewing makes your pouch stretch because of the extra air your putting in.

I don't really snack but I do like to chew gum, it became a habit after I quit smoking 12 years ago.

well everyone is different..maybe for some it does cause air in the pouch.....I know in my case, I can't see how chewing gum can put air into my pouch, I'm sure I would feel it.  as for it getting stuck.....just look at how gum reacts when hitting air......chew some gum and take it out and stick it on a counter top.....the drier the area, the more it will stick.........depending ont he chemical composition of the gum....some gums can be more sticky than others but for the most part, sugar free gum tends to not be so sticky in my experiences.  I don't do much gum as of late.  I'm a HUGE breath savers guy

Hey Jo!!

Glad to hear you didn't have any problems.  The more you read and talk to people about wls, the more information (good AND bad and mythical) you'll find about wls.

Like I said, personally, I have no problems with chewing gum, but I've always been extra careful to not swallow it.

Since you're still so new to everything, it's important that you follow your doctor's guidelines.  Of course, you'll also find that every doctor has a different set of guidelines, making it sometimes frustrating to get a straight answer!
