Topic: Surgery is one week away
Hi everyone...my name is Michele and I am scheduled to have my RNY surgery next wednesday at GBMC with Dr. Moen. What to say....I started this journey back in May weighing in at 276lbs. Since then I have seen the scale top out at 285. I have also ran (jog maybe? but not walk....it was a jog.) my first 5k....which was something I had been attempting for 2 years!

My father had the surgery back in 2001 (but it was so new back then!) and it was a huge success. But other than my father,  I am the first of my friends to have any sort of WLS. I have the friends that support me and those who don't and those who say they do....but they already voiced their concerns so now I don't know if I can really ever believe they support me. I find this to be the hardest part. I count on my friends and family for so much of my support in life.....

I am already expecting the worst so that I will be pleasantly suprised when things aren't so bad. Right now I am envisioning myself feeling very lonely over the next months. Depressed at times because I am not used to the changes my body is going through. At times emotional....wanting to just get passed the first month of the unknowns. Not knowing which protien shakes I will like after surgery, not knowing how I will handle milk products, not knowing what will make me sick. But i know that in the end.....everything I am about to go through will be worth it.

Is it natural for me to be feeling this way?

I welcome all comments and words of advice from those who have "been there, done that."

You look beautiful! Congrats! I am really impressed that insurance covered it!

My surgery is scheduled for next Wednesday. I am so excited about losing the weight. I keep telling people that I will still have complaints about my body....like the skin....but it's better than having the weight. But is that true. I am afraid it's a lie I keep telling myself. Did you ever get depressed about all the extra skin?

(I know this makes me sound like I am only worried about the superficial stuff....That's not the case....but this is something that has been worrying me.)

Funny that once you become the skinny person in the bunch, you look around and realize how obese our society is... and how it can feel rare to see other skinny people. LOL  At least that's my perception...

Topic: GOUT attack

Has anyone had problems with GOUT?  I had RNY surgery on November 22nd and had a gout attack on November 24th (2 days after surgery) and now I'm having another one.  I think its the protein drinks I've been drinking.  I have meds to take but, because of the surgery I can't take them like I need to because of the surgery.

Hi everyone!!

It's been a while since I have posted but I wanted to come back here and share some updates.  I have since found another surgeon, Dr. Singh and so far it looks like my surgery will be sometime in April--pending insurance approval.  Given everything that has happened, I am not over the moon yet, but I am definitely encouraged!  The dietician that I have Nancy Lum is fantastic!  Very encouraging and thorough.  I attended a seminar at St. Agnes yesterday and left feeling like, "I can really do this".  It was a lot of information, but I appreciated the fact that she is working with us to ensure that once we have the surgery, it is not a shock to my system.

I have also been seeing a therapist who is definitely on board, so she will be doing my psych eval and is so excited for me.  Her brother is a year post-op and he is doing very well.

So, I want to thank all of you that took the time to respond to me back in May.  It took me a while to get back in the swing of things.  I am glad that my goal of an improved me, before 40 may be coming to fruition.
