Post Op
It's tough to get the liquid down for some of us because our new, little stomachs are quite swollen, so they can only hold a small amount of fluid at a time. Once the swelling goes down and your stomach relaxes, you can drink normally.
It's not painful if you just sip, sip, sip. Only if you take too large of a gulp.

For the first six days, I took tiny sips...and usually two at a time. I felt like it needed time to "go down." I don't know exactly when it changed, but I remember on my way eight days after surgery I could take bigger sips, then yesterday I noticed my sips were back to normal. Definitely no gulping as I did before, but pretty normal.

Since your stomach is swollen from the VSG the capacity is limited. This will change as the swelling goes down. Initially it's all about taking it slow and easy and sipping. Post surgery it took me an hour to drink and 8.5 oz. protein drink.
This will all change and improve with time. I'm 7 months post-op and can drink and gulp like I did before the VSG. I still have a lot of restriction but liquids go down much easier.
I didn't experience any pain eating or drinking. Even early out when I forgot about surgery and gulped a beverage the discomfort was only momentary.
Good luck,
George
