2 week post op diet??
OK I am a little confused. I have been reading the posts here about what to eat post op. After my surgery I have to be on a liquid diet for up to 4 weeks. Maybe as little as 3 weeks but they recommend 4 weeks. This is from the Dr. office he does it with all his patients I am not the only unlucky one. I have read Kathy's post about mac and cheese and someone else's about tuna. Are you all eating that stuff right out of surgery for real???? I am not suppose to do soft mushy pureed foods til like 3 to 4 weeks out of surgery. Is it safe to eat that stuff right out of surgery? Doesn't our pouches need time to heal? I'm a little confused on this.
Thanks,
Di
Hey Di!
EVERY doctor and nutritionists recommendations/requirements are different. Mine personally had me on clear liquids for 1 week, then full liquids for 1 week then pureed foods for 2 weeks-and was not to eat any meat in those 2 weeks. I got to eat "regular" food at 28 days post op. (and there is NO way I could have eaten mac n cheese) I would say do what your doc tells you to do because his requirements are that way for a reason. HE is the expert on this one.
Best of luck to you!

Hi Di, I know all to well how confusing it can be to do the post-op.... Cause I am here right now!!! LOL
I went to see my NUT and the way they do it is if you are keeping liquids down fine, they will move you to soft mushy foods. Mine was actully 6 days out.. However I have been doing REALLY REALLY good. I haven't gotten sick on anything. But I will tell you this... I am learning when Princess Pouch (her new name)
doesn't like something. I thought I was ok with eggs, but everytime I ate it.. I felt a little funny. So I find things I can tolerate. Now even though I was excited about the Mac&Chesse something inside me said it didn't sound right (even though its part of the soft, mushy food diet per my NUT) So I haven't had any. My thinking with that too was, this was the bad stuff I was eating before surgery.. How can it be good for me now???? I am learning to listen to my body. And I think that is what you will probably experience as well. I decided to focus on, getting my protein in, listening to my body, walk, walk, walk, sip, sip, sip... All things I can do. And Di, I am telling you, you will be AMAZED how easy it really is. It is a whole new way of life, but when you get on that scale and the numbers are going down... You will do anything that you have to do. For the first time in my life, I get excited to put healthy stuff in my mouth. Also, every Dr & Nut is different, so I think you should do what they tell you.. And listen to your body. You will do just fine, I know it!!!!
Love, Kathy

Hey Girl,
Thanks for the reply. I love reading your posts. LOL they really help me alot. I agree about the mac and cheese cause when I read that I was like "Is she for real??? Can she eat that" LOL There is NO WAY my NUT will say that is ok. I wouldn't try that this early either. I do hope it is easy Kathy because right now when you can eat things it seems to you like it is going to be so hard to be on liquids but everyone tells me you don't want anything BUT liquids for a while after surgery. Thanks for the advice. How are things going for you?
Hugs,
Di

What the others said. You will get a diet from your surgeon. I was a week on clear then a week on full then I went to pureed foods. I can tell you this - broth from a can sucks. Instead I used Campbell's chicken soup cooked up and I skimmed the broth. I the diluted the 2 oz of broth with an oz of water. I did the same with veg. beef soup. It was much nicer.

HI Di,
I am right there with you, I am so jealous. I am 9 days out of surgery(LAP RNY) and still on liquid supplements. By the time I get to see the dietician on the 5th of July it will be three weeks. I don't know if you are open or lap? My husband's cousin ( who is a nurse and had open RNY) explained it to me. Lap RNY's even though closed are sometimes more complicated and therefore, need more time to heal.I would like some mushy foods, but I want my pouch to heal correctly. I know I will get food when the time is right.
Hope that helps a litttle,
Good luck to you, Phyllis Gilbert
Hey Phyllis,
How are you? I hope you are doing well. I am having the Lap too on July 17th. I think I will be ok because like Kathy I am going to be too afraid to put any food in my mouth at first. LOL Sometimes this is just so confusing how so many dr. can have different programs. Kinda scary actually. I am sticking to liquids though for as long as they tell me cause I don't want to
LOL Hope things are all good with you.
Hugs,
Di

Hi Di,
I know what you mean about the confusion. My husbands cousin I mentioned, had her surgery done at a Center of Excellence, just like I . She lives in Maine though . Her and I have some differences in how our Drs have done things . You are correct, it is scarey. I feel the same way, I will do what ever they want me to in order to take care of my pouch. I am doing good, trying to get back to normal(if there is a normal). I am getting all of my supplements and fluids in. I am walking between 1 and 1 1/2 miles a day. I also have been doing my share of resting. I am having some of the aggrivations everyone has right out of surgery.
Good Luck to You,
I am praying for you!
Hugs, Phyllis
