Okay, I know I have asked a lot of my buddies lately but the news just keeps getting worse. My husband has been off work for several weeks now because of injuries he suffered in a car accident this past May. He continued to work following the accident but it got to the point where he just could not do his job any longer due to the pain he was in. Well, we went to the neurosurgeon today and my husband will be having surgery on his neck on the 16th. The doc said that in just the last 3 weeks, Tim has lost 60% use of his right hand and that the muscle in the hand has begun to atrophy because of the pinched nerve in his neck. The doc also has said to expect at least a six month recovery period! He made it very clear that if he doesn't have the surgery that he may lose the use of his right hand totally. The scarey part is that the surgery is in the neck right next to the spinal cord. I am so nervous and worried but doing my best not to show it and poor Liz is having a huge problem with all of this as she is the one who was driving the car on the day of the accident. So say lots of prayers for us. Tracy

It's okay, it's scary but they are very very skilled in these surgeries and the success rates are much higher than with our WLS. And they are very honest about the six months, they told me 2 weeks which was a total crock. I wasn't even out of a daze for two months. In may i had three discs taken out of my neck, bone implanted and a titanium plate implanted. Sometime around last month i'd say the pain from the surgery finally passed. i still have pain, numbness etc but it's better than it was before surgery, i can sleep better, hold melanie in my arms longer before they go numb and am no longer at risk for paralysis from a simple bump. i can tell you from experience that a chaise lounge (like from around a swimming pool) will be the most comfortable thing for your husband to sleep in the first two weeks or so. I didn't have one and was MISERABLE with beds and recliners etc. but when i went out to my apt complex's swimming pool the chaises were so comfortable. they supported me without pushing back against my neck, let me recline without bending and were easy to get in and out of. if you or your husband have any questions that i can help with i'd be more than happy. of course it's different for everyone.

Tracy - you can't overload us with your situations - we care about you!!!!! I'm sure financially, it's going to be very hard but I'm so glad that Tim's getting this surgery and I pray that his damage won't be permanent!!! Poor Liz, that must be very hard on her to be the one driving. I would too and I've had "years" of driving experience. Tim's situation has got me thinking though. My right arm and neck have been "tingley" for a little while now. I have a herniated disk in my neck (although I don't know what that is). I should go get it checked out and see if that's where the funny feeling in my arm and neck is coming from. I don't want to lose the use of my arm that's for sure. I already notice a big difference in my handwriting. Laurie
