URGENT: NEED INFO ON HOMLESS SHELTER AND HELP IN OAKLAND COUNTY
i have a friend that is going to be kicked out of her place she is renting in really soon and needs information on places that might be able to help.
She dosent have a car and is currently on unemployment, so her transportation is limited as well. she also needs to know of options for storage of her things that she does have cause she dosent want to lose them, and also about the possibility of placing her cat for adoption with s aplace that will not kill her just cause shes an old cat.
any help would be appreciated and I will pass on the information.
Hi. Your friend can call 1-800-A-Shelter to find an available shelter in her area. She can also call her local legal aid office for advice on the pending eviction and, possibly, social services or other useful referrals. You can find a local legal aid number by going to michiganlegalaid.org and entering a zip code.
As for storage options - the top two picks are a) a friend's garage or basement, or b) a commercial storage company -- one of those places that you see along the highway, with an endless row of garage-type stalls. Rates vary by the size of the unit needed, but are generally reasonable. The only catch is that, when you rent a storage unit, you generally sign a contract saying they can sell or otherwise pillage your things if you fail to keep up on your monthly payments. Thus, she would need to read the contract carefully and stay on top of the montly payments until she finds another place to go.
As for her cat - try googling: no kill animal shelter Michigan. There are also a few animal foster care networks around the state that match pets in need of temporary shelter with people willing to take them. A local Humane Society or veterinarian may have contact information for such a network.
Good luck to your friend!
Another option is Volunteers of America. I know they have a mission in Lansing but they may be able to help where ever she is at. Or she can call her local YWCA.
Also there is an organization called Adopt-a-Pet. They will take in animals of all types and adopt them out. They DO NOT kill any animals. There used to be one in Fenton I don't know anymore. Hope this helps.
