Hi!! Im Maria and live in lennon, michigan. Im 35, married, 2 daughters, and 3 fur babies. I originally started lurking this site 3 yrs ago when i first started looking into rny. I had started the pre surgury testing back then only to have to change insurance and at the time my new insurance would not cover surgury. 3 yrs later I am finally redoing the entire process. I have completed my psych eval, pcp reccommendation * he was thrilled that insurance would finally cover it*, and had the initial consult with doctor obeid at hurley in flint, im now just waiting on my pcp to send my chart to hurley and should get a phone call with my date any time now**prays really really hard and asks santa for that as her only christmas gift** I have some questions about hurley and if anyone can share their experiences there. I have been trying to start a high protein diet like my pcp suggested but am unsure of what kinds of protein i should get he recommended 70-100g and isopure no carb, I tried the isopure and it wasnt that bad but at $3.75 a bottle Yikes!!!! Any suggestions would be appreciated in this confusing time

Im not an RNY patient Im a lapbander but we all need that protien.. you can buy protien powders that you can mix into foods. they do make unflavored ones. you can also buy flavored ones and make shakes with skim milk and or yogurt. slim fast makes a low carb shake that has 20 g. protien per can. I think it tastes ok. good luck to you..

I did not go to Hurley but I also need about 60-80 grams of protein in per day. I do use Isopure GNC makes in the glass bottles and yep, it is expensive but, getting a GNC member card does help if you buy it at the first 6-7 days of each month, you save about 20%. I also use ANY WHEY, it's unflavored, and runs about 19.99 at GNC for a 30 serving cannister. I put two scoops (17 grams protein per scoop) in my coffee, teas, and oatmeal. It has a vanilla scent to it and as long as the food/drink you are cooking isn't too hot, it mixes right into it well. I also recommend trying Syntrax Nectars, fruity flavored you mix with water and other fruits and yogurt (plain) and so on. That runs about 35.00 for a 60 serving cannister and each scoop contains about 24 grams of protein per (I believe). Weight contol oatmeal has protein in it, special K has a protein cereal low in sugar and high in protein 10 grams per 3/4 cup, and you can also try various sorts of protein powders found at drug stores, some grocery stores (like Meijer, Kroger and Walmart) carry Whey proteins in the health sections that are different prices. I'd try vanilla and add it to hot cocoa or sf cib (sugar free carnation instant breakfast) and blend it in a blender. Protein is expensive, but once you have WLS, your main dietary need is protein, and what you'd spend on foods now, you will not need to spend then, and can use towards your proteins. www.vitalady.com also offers samples of many many flavors as does www.unjury.com which has an unflavored powder as well as chocolate and vanilla. Keep using samples until you find one that workds for you and your budget. best wishes!! Stacey W 310/147

I'm a Hurley patient. I had LAP RNY in August of 05. I am 36. I've lost 130 pounds. Dr. Farhan was my surgeon. Feel free to email me. I'll help answer as many questions as I can. Tina

HI Maria! I go in tomorrow (the 7th) and so far I have been very happy with dr. Obeid and hurley! I did get my records from my pcp and deliver them- to expediate the process (and I made a copy for my own records!). and that way my choice- just because I'm a bit impatient and didn't want to wait for the delivery. I have nutrition class today - joy So all in all I know little but I'll be more than happy to email you afterwards and let you know how it went :D Blessings! Jennifer

Does anyone have any experience dealing with medicare in michigan for wls? Good luck to all with being on the losing side hopefully i will be there sooner or later Maria
