Osteoporosis + WLS + Boniva = good news for me/you

I have had Osteoporosis in two of my lumbar for several years. It due to having had cancer in 1991, undergoing a complete hysterectomy at age 31, and early menopause. I have been taking supplements of calcium on top of my daily vites and last year my PCP had prescribed a nasal spray for me to take after my WLS. This being due to my WLS surgeon not having extensive research on Boniva and what it would do to the pouch of a WLS RNY patient. I am pleased that my PCP has now completed extensive research on Boniva and the pouch on a WLS patient, herself having had RNY but doesn't suffer Osteoporosis as I do, she has given me the opportunity to take Boniva following her instructions. **I have to do baseline labs before taking the Boniva** **I have to take Prilosec OTC 2 days prior, the day of, and 2 days after taking Boniva** **I have to have my calcium levels checked every 3 months for the time I am taking Boniva** I wanted to share this information with anyone out there who may suffer from Osteoporosis. My WLS Surgeon has not had experience with a patient who suffers from Osteoporosis and the nasal spray is becoming a problem for me so I was persistent in my quest to get on something I can take orally rather than spray stuff up my nose . This just information and not medical advice per the guidelines of oh.com, I wanted to share with you that I was able to accomplish. Thanks for letting me share Stacey W

Thank you Stacy for this information. I too had cancer and a hysterectomy at an early age and have been diagnased with borderline osteoporosis. I'm not on medication other than calcium now but I plan to discuss medication options w/ my Dr. at my next annual physical. Thanks. Kim

Kim, You're welcome. I wasnt sure this would help anyone or not, but with the multitude of great folks here, I thought it couldn't hurt to FYI it. Be sure to ask questions, and see what else is out there. It has taken me over a year to get to this point, making sure I understand that my PCP is just not sure how my pouch will handle it, I'm kind of being 'her" guinea pig for it since my WLS surgeon has no clues what would happen. That's why the prelim labs and Prilosec otc before, during and after to protect the pouch when I do take it. And labs every 3 months while on it. And then in 1 year another bone density test. I"m sorry you've had to endure the same, keep in touch. never can have enough support ............ Stacey W
