Protein help
Ok i am trying a couple diff proteins since I will be having surgery in 10 days......can I usse just half scoop of protein powder like Unjury..and then count it as 10 grams protein? thats an awfully big scoop..lol
And has anyone used the chocolate and added it to warm/ho****er , but not over 130 degrees and made hot chocolate??
I need losts of suggestions...they need a section for just recipes to use the protein powders. I bought 2 big containers of the tasteless ans one container of the chocolate. and then I bought some samples.
I also bought chicken stock, for warm broth. A few people suggested this over the packets and boullion cubes.
Unjury has chicken broth protein powder now, 20 grams of protein, delish! And that's coming from the picky protein queen!
I have hot cocoa a lot, I can tolerate skim milk, so I heat 8 oz up then, I'll use the Nestle`s no sugar added hot cocoa with 1 scoop of Body Fortress Chocolate ( from walmart $11.97 for a 2 lb jug), mixes well and tastes yumm-o! 33 grams of protein!
You can mix most powders with water, de-cafe coffee/tea, crystal light, juices, skim milk, the options are endless. Experiment with different flavors.
My favorite is to use :
1/2 cup frozen fruit, (mixed, has manderine orange, peaches, strawberries, mango)
1/3 cup full strength crystal light sunshine orange,
1/3 cup water
2 scoops of Whey Protein Strawberry (36 grams protein)
1/2 packet splenda
mix well in my magic bullet, it's just like a fruity frosty. I drink it with a straw and it's gone in no time. Delish!
I also use skim milk, 1 cup adds 8 grams of protein.
Hope this helps,
Cynthia
Realize that after surgery, you need at least 60-70 gms protein per day, and at first, it's easier to adjust to protein shakes, drinks, and powders mixed with stuff.
I tried endlessly all the flavored proteins out there. They were too sweet for me.
I found GNC had "natures best" pre made bottled in glass 20 ounces of no sugars (blue lid) protein clear whey isolate in many flavors that I could tolerate well. I have been enjoying Icy Orange lately. Though Grape Frost isn't bad either.
Try those, but I recommend you remember, each bottle contains 40gms of proteins and our bodies can't absorb more than 30 at a time. (If I'm wrong here someone please let me know- is it in an hour?)
I now am on the "Any Whey" unflavored protein powder. It has 17 gms protein in a smaller scoop than Unjury does as I've seen it and compared. I understand Unjury to be great but it's all a matter of personal taste. I did not care for the smell Unjury had when I opened the container. I did enjoy the nearly vanilla scent Any Whey has when I open the lid. I put 2 scoops (not quite) in my coffee in the morning and before work. I cannot tell it is there.
I have used it in making SF cookies but have to add extra liquids when doing so.
Check with your NUT for recipes. I may have some in my WLS notebook at home I can mail to you later. (am at work presently)
www.vitalady.com also has samples of a variety of flavors and at the time, I enjoyed the cookie dough protein powder but soon became lactose intolerant and I just can't stand mixing that powder with water.
I have had problems adding Any Whey to hot cocoa if too hot. I mix it with some warm water, into a paste, then slowly add it to the cocoa. However, I do not drink alot of hot cocoa. Cocoa has never been a favorite of mine since WLS. My taste buds have changed deeply and you will find after surgery, yours most likely will also.
I'll see what I can come up with when I get home later and email you recipes.

Thanks for the replies....I am really getting worried now. I am afraid now I won't be able to tolerate the taste......egads!!! I didn't listen and bought 2 big containers or the unflavored Unjury too. It's the smell I think....I am starting ym liquid diet today....so will have to just test test test. But i do want to know if I can use half scoop of powder....maybe won't smell and taste as bad...and then only get 10 gr protein.
Does anyone else do this. Or perhaps bet a container, and put in 80 grs worth and slowly thru out the day...add it to things, until it is gone?
Hi, Deborah.
I, too, bought lots of samples and protein powder before surgery. I was using one with skim milk. It was a chocolate powder from GNC (in the red and black containers). It was just like drinking chocolate milk. However, after surgery, I could no longer tolerate any protein with whey in it. So I really had to work on getting as much protein in through my food, as possible. This is a difficult task when you can't eat very much!
I was supposed to have allergy testing about a week before surgery but they wanted me to wait. As it turned out, I am allergic to milk. Not lactose intolerant but allergic. It affected me differently before surgery(LONG story) with non-typical symptoms. After surgery, it made me physically ill as soon as I had whey.
Besides the allergies, my tastes totally changed. I had a really hard time with ANY sweet, fruity protein powders. So much that I couldn't even stand the smell of them, sealed in their packages in my cupboard! when I did try to drink them, I had to drink them from a sealed cup, so I couldn't smell them. That helped with getting them down, but because of the whey, it didn't stay down.
You can use a 1/2 a scoop, I would think, just as you could double the scoop. Now as far as mixing a drink with 80grams to have throughout the day, I'm not sure. I've heard different opinions on this.
Oh, and the protein drinks that Stacey mentioned (no offense, Stacey), were disgusting to me! LOL!! They tasted terrible! I couldn't get past the taste of ANY of the flavors. Buy in small quantities until you find something that works.
I did make a smoothie that worked for me. It was a scoop of vanilla soy powder, about 5 frozen strawberries and 1/2 a cup of skim milk and a little ice. I would put this in the blender and blend it very well! I don't know why, but the skim milk in this one didn't make me immediately sick like the whey powders did, so if I was falling short on my protein count, I would make one of these. But since about 8 months out, I've been able to get my protein from my food. I've been lucky in that I can tolerate any type of meat. In fact, beef was the easiest meat for me to tolerate, early on.
Just remember, EVERYONE is different. You have to find what works for you. LOTS of trial and error! Good luck! Tina
