Help I have an important question!
HI Everyone,
It is the middle of the night and I am once again up in pain! How much water and fluids are we supposed to get in daily? I am 6 days post op at home. Are we still only supposed to sip out of our little medicine cups? At the hospital they told me only one every 15 minutes! If you sip a little faster does this cause the gas problems to increase? My gas is still there; and sometimes I am getting sharp pains with it!!! Anyone your advise and help are welcome. Thanks, Judy R
p.s. Today I got in about 30-35 ounce of fluids; 20 ounce of water!
Hi Judy,
You are in a very normal place right now. Your abdomen was filled with carbon dioxide gas so the surgeon could see all parts of your gastric system. It can take a couple of weeks for that gas to escape. It can be very uncomfortable and painful at times. Move around and walk as much as possible. Do keep in mind though; any sustained abdominal pain or severe pain should be reported to your surgeon immediately.
Your fluid intake per day should be around 64 ounces. I know it's hard to get that much in every day, but you don't have to drink it all. Sugar-free popsicles and jello are counted as fluid. Are you still on clear liquids? Try warm broth, caffeine free tea, etc. I found that warm liquids were more comfortable in my pouch. Plain water still hurts me and I am 4 1/2 months post-op. Cold drinks can cause painful spasms in the emptying tube.
Try taking tiny sips every couple of minutes. All day. Walk around the house or take a walk outside. It will really help move that C02 out of your belly.
It DOES get better. Be patient. Good Luck.

Ditto what Kathy said... I don't think I can add much more.... all of that is what I heard before...I never had too much gas pain after they took the drain out, but cold water did hurt my pouch and still does.. I have to drink it room temp... It will all get better... best of luck to you...

I am 5 days post op and I am drinking out of a water bottle. Just sipping of course. I am getting in 64 ouces of water and 80 grams protein. Sometimes a bit more, especially in last couple days, since I have moved to full liquids. I am eating yogurt and pudding so that helps, that was day 3 and 4. Tommorrow I can start soft food, as long as things went well the last 2. And they have. I still have a bit of gas.....I either walk or lay flat. I think the Unjury Chocolate flavor protein saved me. It's like driking chocolate milk.
