Bariatrics and Alcohol!!!

As we all know, when you have Gastric Bypass we lose all or most of our guts. When you drink alcohol you usually can eat and soak up some alcohol that was comsumed. Well with no gut we all know that alcohol goes into your system alot faster. I just want to put out a warning that as a bariatric patient you really need to not drive while consuming alcohol. Case in point ~ I have a friend who had Gastric Bypass a year before me. Well she was pulled over and blew a legal limit for being legally intoxicated. It was her first offense but she spent the night in jail, was sentenced to 31 days in jail with one served, 60 days probation and a $950 fine. In some people it only takes 1-2 drinks to be legally intoxicated. Also remember that alcohol stays in your system longer than a non-bariatric patient. Just wanted to give heads up to newbies and some of us who tend to forget that we are bariatric patients.

Hi Rae! I believe she had two drinks. I am the same way, 1 glass of wine and I am not responsible for anything I do! So my hubby only lets me drink at home. If I get a glass of wine out for dinner then he will help me drink it!

Tami, Thanks for posting this information and your friend's experience. I'm one that would occassionally have a drink if we were out for a special dinner (birthday, anniversary, etc.), but I haven't had any alcohol in like 4 years. Since the issue has never come up for me, I hadn't even asked anyone about it. Now, if someone should ask me, at least I'll have an idea of what is possible . This is good information for us to have, important information! Thank you again! Lizzie B
