Yesterday was our employee breakfast. I foolishly drank 3 ounces of apple juice and then with the breakfast I had a scrambled egg, a pineapple chunk, half a large strawberry and 2 large blackberries. Half an hour later I got back to the office and my heart was racing what seemed to be 900 mph. After an hour it didn't go away so I went to the ER. They hooked me up to the monitor and my heart rate at that time was 212 along with high blood pressure. They did all sorts of tests to see if I had a heart attack (all were normal) but could not give me a definitive answer as to what happened. They were going to notify my PCP so she could schedule other tests. After I got home, I got to wondering if the fruit and juice caused the problem. I went to the Mayo Clinic site and found that rapid heart rate/palpatations were a symptom of dumping. I usually get the nausea, sweating, cramps and diarrhea and never gave this a thought but now I know what happens when I get too much sugar. I seem to be very sensitive to sugar and anything over 7 grams will make me dump. Just how much over will determine how bad the dump is. I have printed out the symptoms and will take them along with a note to the ER doc that maybe he would want to do a finger stick if a roux-en-y patient comes in with these symptoms.

Hi Ann, Thanks for posting this....I think that everyone should recognize the signs their body is giving them. I do ok with sweet stuff in moderation, but the worst dump I had was right after surgery when I had some lime juice and pears. I guess it was just too much for me to handle! I had the same symptoms you described, but didn't think I could be dumping from just eating fruit. Glad you're feeling ok now. Brenda

I can't drink any fruit juice or eat any fruit because there is too much sugar. The NUT said that natural sugar should be ok but not for me. I started drinking apple juice and was sick for a week. Glad you are better. Stacey B

My surgeons office has told me that if I drink apple juice, that it must be half juice, half water. Otherwise there is too much sugar.

You have just highlighted my biggest fear, uninformed hospital personnel. I've been having some serious pain and have been hospitalized twice recently. I find it is not safe to take enough pain meds for comfort because someone in scrubs ALWAYS does something inappropriate for a wls patient. No, I won't take alka-seltzer, the doctor who wants me to is NOT familiar with wls. No, don't give me diet soda with a straw. What are these medications and where are my stool softeners? My sheet is marked cardiac AND no sugar, are you sure this jello is sugar free? Oh, it isn't. And the apple sauce next to it is not unsweetened. No, a little sugar is NOT good for me.Why won't you give me protein supplements, or get the ones I brought out of the refrigerator for me? Will you please put some Splenda on the tray with the oatmeal? Sugar, salt and pepper are not going to work for me. And, NO YOU MAY NOT GIVE ME ANY NSAIDs! I said NO. I mean NO. Ask my surgeon, he is on staff here and can be easily reached. NO, if nsaids are the only way you know to threat that condition, we need more research, another doctor or we need to treat the symptoms only. Yes, I HAVE to take the prevacid that was ordered. No, I will not take this pill unless you tell me what it is, who ordered it and for what purpose. No, I am not going to take an nsaid, no matter what name it is listed under, and where are my stool softeners? You are giving me iron and vicodin, you have now written down that it is seven days since my last bm, what do you propose to do about it? Then can I have some petroleum jelly and gloves? And the stool softeners? Okay, not all those things were life-threatening, but none of them were to my benefit and all are actual situations, at a pretty good hospital. One that offers wls. Please, let the head of ER (often a contrated-out company), the hospital head and your insurance company know that more information must be made available to their staff. And be thankful that they did no harm.

It's called a late dump. Want lessons in i****ch Jon. 7 grams an hour - it's over time. I can eat a bag of sugar. It will take me a year and a half. kp

Jane, I printed out the sheet from the Mayo Clinic that talks about dumping. I took this and put it with a note to the ER doctor and I'm sure he'll remember to check these things out next time. I'm very lucky in that he is a very good ER doc. When my hubby went into cardiac arrest in 2000, I did the CPR thing and then the EMS shocked him and rushed him to the hospital. Dr. Frye was the ER attending at the time and he did a wonderful job. The prognosis at that time was horrible but the steps he took helped so much that instead of having a 95% chance of brain damage, it went down to 5% with only a short term memory problem to show for the whole ordeal. I couldn't believe it but when Dr. Frye saw me, he remembered me from that night. I think he's a very caring doctor and is always learning so I'm sure this question will be put into the protocol of any roux-en-y patient coming in with problems.
