Complication to surgery? (Not sure)...

I had my RNY just a little over 4 years ago and my tummy tuck 2 years ago last October. With my work schedule and family its hard to get here and post. Anyway, I think I may have either developed an ulcer or something else. I keep getting this pain just underneath my breastbone area and just underneath the ribs, sometimes it radiates to the back. Its not burning, its like someone hauled off and punched me in those areas. Also whenever I eat or drink its like the food or whatever Im drinking wants to stay there in my esophagus for a while. It eventually goes down, but it takes a while, and it doesnt matter how much it is. I have no gallbladder, so I know its not that. I did go to the doctor, she told me to take OTC Prilosec, did some bloodwork on me, all was ok that way, and I go back to see her the 10th of April. Any of you experienced anything similar? Just seems kind of odd that anything would happen so far postop, but I guess anythings possible.

Are you kidding? We can run into complications at anytime. To me, because you said it takes a while for anything to go down, it sounds like a stricture. Call your surgeon. Whatever it is you need to be scoped to see what's wrong before it gets any worse. Hugs Linda

Hi Kris, Like Linda said, "we can get complications anytime." I am about 20 months out. A year ago, (last February) I ended up hospitalized for 5 days with an ulcer. I had absolutely no symptoms at all until I started bleeding rectally. The drs. said that I had been bleeding for a while internally before I had bleeding that I could see. I was sent to the hospital the same morning I noticed the blood. By the time I arrived I was so weak I needed to be tranfused and received two units of blood. You mentioned symptoms that you had not experienced prior to this time. It is extremely important that you get an endoscopy done ASAP so the problem can be diagnosed. If you are having internal bleeding, April 10 is WAY TO LONG to wait. I would contact your surgeon and ask to be checked out right away. I hope I am not scaring you but having had an ulcer I really want to be sure no one else has to suffer with this. When you are bleeding out inside it is an emergency. But by the time you are losing blood externally as well, you can literally feel your life slipping away. Please keep us posted as how you come out. Pam

Call your surgeon ASAP. I'm 6 years post-op and have had 4 surgeries all from complications to the gastric bypass.

Hey Kris, I have just been through this; I had a stricture and an ulcer. Don't let it go on and on; this can get you into serious trouble. I got dehydrated, and my potasium bottomed out which landed me in the hospital and was life threating. What they did for me was put me on IV fluids, potasium; and then did a scope with balloon procedure to open that blockage. I feel 90 percent better already! Are hear these are comon with RNY. Good luck but please do not let it go on long; I had to be hospitalized!!! I take Cariffate, and Reglin now.. Sincerely, Judy R,
