With all the talk about protein drinks it got me wondering what everyone else does. Do you drink it straight or mix it with something else? I have been wanting to switch things up as I am getting bored with my usual protein ****tail. So please tell me how you drink your protein.
For quite awhile now I have been using Isopure Vanilla. I take a heaping scoop and mix it with some water and a little orange juice. It tastes kinda creamsiclish(no it's not really a word, I checked). I don't measure the water and juice, I just eyeball it. I don't use too much OJ though because of the sugar content.

Hi Deby,
Suggestion:
You might want to cut that down to 1 scoop of the nectar. The consensus is that the max we absorb is about 30 grams at one time, you might as well be throwing the extra scoop of nectar away with the cash. Also, don't forget, it's best to consume it within the 30 minutes time line, after that 30 minutes, the proteins begin to breakdown and bacteria begin to grow as well.
Again, just a suggestion..........
Hi Cynthia,
Thanks for suggestion. Any extra protein you take into your body is dumped via kidneys (urine). Everyone uses protein @ different amounts, @ different times of the day. Not sure where you got your info r/t protein breakdown, but it doesn't breakdown all that much for 24 hr. after being mixed with fluid. And if kept cold no bacteria growth.
But thanks for your suggestion...........
Deby
I'm just going by what the surgeon and nutritionists have told me, as well as doing research online and in the local library. Anyone can google or yahoo "where does the extra protein go", you'll find several articls there and they all say the same basic thing:
There is also a limit to the amount of protein we asimilate at any one time. This limit is around 25 - 30 grams per intake meal/snack. Excess protein is broken down and simply converts and stores as fat.
As far as where I've gotten info on protein breakdown, that is from serveral sources as well, the surgeon and nutritionists, online, reading material and the companies that make and distribute the protein powders. But most importantly, the lables on my protein containers. Not to mention this board as well lol
Sorry to have up-set you!!! I've been a R.N. for over 20 yr. & take care of many, many Beri patients. Not sure who told you that protein converts to fat, but they are verrrrrrrry wrong, carbs & fat are stored in the human body, but NOT protein. Protein is excreted via urine. that's why anyone with a renal problem, or dialysis is usually on a low/controlled protein diet.
I don't get a lot of my info from online, I just ask the physicians & nuritionist in person.
I began in 2005 using "Vita Lady" samples from her site www.vitalady.com.
I dreaded mixing them with milk. But did it with skim, and ice cubes in the blender.
After about 3 months of that, I found "Nature's Best Isopure" Clear isolate whey protein in 20 ounce bottles at GNC for about 3.49 per bottle. Each has no sugar and contains 40 gms of protein which I divided into two parts thru the day. I tried them all, but found Icy Orange to be my weakness, even now when I need a lift.
Now, I use Any Whey unflavored whey protein. Comes in two sizes (not available everywhere in 60 serving cannisters) 30 serving and 60 serving. Each scoop has 17 grams of protein. This can be used in baking, cooking, etc. But when adding to hot liquids there is a KEY. All liquids need to be less than 130 degrees OR the stuff clumps and it's nasty and looks worse than cottage cheese.
Tip: I mix 2 scoops in my coffee= first make about 2/3 cup of coffee, splenda, and then cream (liqiud that is Cold)....this lowers the temperature of the coffee so the Any Whey doesnt clump!
You can do the same to hot cocoa, just add some cold milk first to cool it down.
I don't recommend adding it to cold things but you can add it to juices and teas. I just don't care for those.
Good Luck!

Even though I am Pre -op I work out alot and drink alot of protien shakes. My faves are: Isopure Chocolate I mix it with a 1/2 banana and Skim milk it is really yummy. or EAS Whey Protein strawberry mixed with Banana or blue berries, or your Vanilla one mixed with strawberries or any berries and All made with Skim and some Ice cubes are really yummy. With the added milk u also get more Protein....
Good Luck
