Hi, I had my consult with my doc/surgeon and he said I would do fine with the lap band but would do the RNY if that is what I wanted. I have looked into both and am not sure. I had wanted RNY because of the restrictiveness. But my doc said I would do fine with Lap band. How did you decide? Thanks! Krysti

Hi Krysti, All I can say is follow your heart and do lots of research. Research is the key. I know that doesn't sound like much help. But everyone reacts to the different surgeries differntly. It is amazing, just how different. 2 people can have the exact same surgeon and the exact same procedure but they can have very different results, and/or complications or issues. So you will have to really do the research and then way the pros and cons. Good luck on the decision making. God Bless and take care---Toni

Yes just like Toni said....Everyone is different and everyones needs are different...But you need to look at both and compare the good with the bad....Then look at what you need....You will see all the true life stories of mostly good but know anything that is hard in life has it's price....There are alot of websites out there with information....Start with all the websites nearest to you that do the surgery.....I hope this helps....Good luck.......Let us know what you find out......Crystal

Like Toni said, research is the key! I will tell you why I chose the RNY over Lap Band (I think this is the kind of thing you are looking for). For me I had 205lbs to lose to get to a normal BMI. Lap Band loss is much slower than RNY and I knew for my health I needed quicker results. Also there is more "restriction" with the RNY. From what I understand you can still eat everything as normal, just much smaller portions. I needed more than that if I was going to resort to surgery. Not to say that sugar was a "downfall" of mine, but I knew that more dicipline is what I was going to need to get through this and be successful. I will be one year out next Saturday and have lost 144lbs to date. I am also 7 weeks pregnant, so my journey is on a small hiatus for now. I still have about 60lbs to lose to get to goal and I WILL do it!!! You might get answers like those before mine, but I am going to suggest (if you didn't already) that you visit the Lap Band forum and ask the same question you did here. Hopefully you will get a complete picture to look at and be comfortable with what ever you choose. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/lapband/a,messageboard/board_id,5359/ Jennifer 355/211/150

Hi Kristi, I am an RNY and my daughter is Lap band. She is doing fine but sometimes wishes she had RNY. I have had complications, but would do it again. I will tell you that with the RNY you are a lot more restricted, and you are giving up a lot more. No more sugar.. That is why I chose it; I have a lot of health problems to conquer! It does take soul searching for what is best for you. Look into the future, as well as your past habits; see what you can live with. My hubby only wanted me to do lap band; but because of the state of my health I choose the RNY. Family history should also play a part in your decision, as well as age, and definately commitment! My daughter is doing well with the lap band; and she chose it because of her younger age, and possibly wanting another baby. Good luck with your choice it is all a huge comittment! Sincerely, Judy R.

Krysti, I went to a seminar before I made the choice. I went in with the mindset that I wanted the lap band, but ended up choosing RNY. The doctor was asked the question of reasons for lap band versus RNY. He said the decision should be made on the basis of what you know about you; that if you have a problem with sweets, you should consider RNY. If not, you should consider the lap band. I would suggest you go to a seminar. The people there asked questions I wouldn't have thought to ask. Marie

Thanks Everyone! Your comments really help me. I agree with you about the research and I have done a lot of it over the last two years. I did attend the Traverse City Seminar and still came away thinking to do the RNY. I liked your comment Marie about the sweets and RNY. I think that is what I was thinking about as I am a big sweet eater. My thoughts was the more restrictive and the dumping symptoms will help me not eat sweets. You all are the best! Thanks so much for your great feedback! I am so excited to begin my weightloss journey. I love reading about all of your stories of weightloss and appreciate your honesty. It isn't an easy road but having a support system like this forum helps us all make it. God Bless You All! Krysti

It really is about research. I think if you go to some seminars and learn the ups & downs of each procedure, you will get a clearer feeling of what is "for you!" and that's the important part. Everyone is personal. For me, LapBand was the choice because it has less complications and it's reversible. I liked the slower weight loss rate (and looked at that as a positive... adjusting to my new body, new life, not getting malnurished... etc). But that's just ME! Seriously, attend the seminars. That really really helped me.

Like everyone said is to do the research plus you need to consider your insurance company because some to not cover the lap band and only the RNY surgery. I would talk to your insurance also before you make your decision. Tricia
