:help How do you decide - RNY or Lap Band
As the others above me said, do the research, either one is a big change in your life.
I think of the LapBand as merely a restrictive tool for weightloss, and I know that it is a LOT of work. It will require commitment and be challenging. I don't think of Bypass in quite the same way. I guess it is a tool for restriction as well, but it also forces you to lose weight through malabsorption, malnutrition and keeps you honest about not eating sweets/fats by causing you to "dump." If you are a person who has a tendency to "graze" all day and loves sweets, then RNY may be better for you. I have problems with portion control, so I felt LapBand was a good choice for me.
I also chose LapBand because I can't get right with having my intestines rerouted and not be able to have it "put back" if something goes wrong. Sure they can do a revision, but what's taken out is gone forever. If I have complications with the Band, it is fairly easily removed and nothing has been surgically done to my intestinal system.
The latest studies on large sections of post WLS patients are showing that four and five years out the amount of excess weight lost is about the same. I'd rather have the same weight loss in five years without major surgery. But if I had any comorbidities or health problems that required me to lose weight ASAP, I'd chose the RNY because I'd likely lose weight faster without quite as much work as would be required with the Band.
It is a highly personal decision and not one to be taken without doing tons of research on both. You may want to also check out lapbandtalk.com for a little more info on banding.
