well they say I have sleep apnea ! grrrrr So I have to call the guy tomorrow and set up an appt to get fitted for a c-pap machine. I'm kinda upset because I was just hoping I wouldn't have it then I could go straight for surgery. Oh well ..... So is it true that once I get fitted I have to do the sleep test all over again? and then wait so long before Doc will do surgery? I have to be honest... I am getting really frustrated ! ! ! Seems like this has been going on forever ! Thanks for letting me vent ~~Rona

I am not sure why you would have to wait, or even be retested before they would do surgery. You may need to be retested after you have lost a significant amount of weight to see if you still have sleep apnea, because most of the time the apnea is fixed with the weight loss. Try not to get frustrated, it will happen in time, and probably sooner than you think. You want to make sure you go into this as safe as you possibly can, so the extra steps are worth it in the long run. Good Luck. Carol

Well thank God you found out now instead of later. a c-pap isn't as bad as you think once you get used to it. When you get set up for your fitting make sure to let them know if you sleep on your side, stomach, etc. You'll be suprised how great you sleep with it. Some doctors make you use it two weeks before surgery. My sleep study was two nights, one for the test and the second for them to figure what to set it at. Did they wake you up and put a cpap on you during the night? Hugs Linda

I don't know why they would make you do the sleep test all over again when they already know you have it. Hmmmm..... Sucks that you have it, but the mask will make a world of difference. I can't see that holding up your surgery for too long if at all.

Rona, I have the same result as you - I have sleep apnea too. When I talked to Dr. Featherstone last week about sleep apnea and should I go back for the second night to get fitted or wait until after surgery, he told me to go back for it . He did not say anything about it delaying surgery. I think it just will give you another co-morbidity and another reason for the surgery. Don't get frustrated! We just have to go through all the hoops and then our time will come. Keep your chin up!! Krysti

Rona, I don't know anything as far as holding up your surgery (not to that point yet, personally). But, I, too, was just told this week that I have sleep apnea. I don't know anything about my results other than the gal saying the next morning "You'll be back in to see me soon, for another one of these tests" I guess at the next one I'll be fitted to the CPAP machine. My PCP was saying the morning before I had the sleep study that he wanted it to come out positive (shocked me at first). But, I don't really have any other co-morbities (sp?) other than PCOS. He said it'll be another reason to show my ins. company that I need the surgery. I guess its typically something that'll go away with a significant weight loss. (or so I'm hoping!) Anyway, Best wishes to ya girl!!! Shawna

Yes it does help with insurace if you do have sleep apnea, as another co-morb, the reason for knowing before surgery is that with the pain meds you could sleep too deeply annnd your body might not wake you up, so the thought is to have your machine handy for after the surgery to help you with that, I took mine with me and having an ng tube it would't fit. many Drs don't use the ng tube so no trouble there, and probably after you lose some weight you won't have sleep apnea anymore, be proactive in getting your apts and your surgery will happen quicker, best wishes Marcia PS this is an important issue.

Hi Rona, Thanks for posting your results. I was wondering how it turned out. I have sleep apnea also. The second overnight is just to make sure your machine is on the correct setting. Linda is right, after you get used to your machine, you will sleep much better and feel more rested during the day. With all that being said, I don't understand why they won't go ahead and schedule your surgery. I know that waiting has got to be driving you nuts. Keep us posted. Joni
