Need help--trip to Mexico has me sick for 4 weeks

I've never had problems with diarrhea from the gastric bypass. I'm 4 years post-op. But my recent trip to Mexico has had me sick for 4 weeks. The doctor has prescribed antibiotics, flagyl, prescription strength amodium. Nothing is slowing it down. At one point I became extremely dehydrated from running to the bathroom every 20 minutes to half hour. I've run the course with the prescriptions with no relief. I've tried bananas, beef, and every food substance I could think of that would cause constipation. Nothing works. I've even had urine and stool samples taken for analysis. I'm waiting for the results on those. Has anyone had the same problem? What did you do? I'm worn out and I really need help.

Gosh, I have no idea Gavriella, but I surely hope you find the answer. It sounds so tiring! Hopefully the tests will come back with some answers and a clue as to how to treat it. Best of luck and keep us posted. Hugs, Theresa

They should probably put you in the hospital for a day or two so that you can get some fluids in you. I'm sure with all that running to the bathroom your electrolytes are all out of whack. Did they test you for H. Pylori or some other infection? I hope you get better soon.

The dr is running urine, fecal, and blood tests. Hopefully they will find the answer. Currently, I'm watering down Pedialyte to drink. Nothing stays in my system for more than 5 hours. Everything just rumbles.

Try light yogurt. It helps re establish normal bacteria.

That's good to drink. Just be sure that you don't drink regular juice because that will exacerbate your diarrhea. Also, if you are having anything with artificial sweetners, that may also worsen your diarrhea. I'm surprised that after that long, they don't have you in the hospital.

They haven't put me in the hospital, because I haven't lost weight. I've been drinking enough water. But it has just worn me out. This kind of sleep deprivation is no picnic. I just hope this isn't something that my gastric bypass has permanently transformed into. I don't think I could live my life like this.

Montazuma's revenge! I thought they knew what caused this, some kind of bacteria or something I thought. Anyway, sorry you are feeling bad right now. Just keep drinking and as the doctors for some anti diarrheal pills, they do help. Wendy
