Came home from hospital yesterday, had RNY on Monday with a hernia surgery. I finally slept 12 hours after getting home (to make up for the 2 & 4 hours I had in the hospital) The pain is very trying and I don't want anything. Any words of encouragement...things I can do. HELP!

I am 2 weeks post-op and I still haven't gotten a good nights sleep but, I have had to stop my c-pap machine because all the air pressure was making be wayyy to nauseous! And at this point...I would rather be tired then sick to stomach. I had to make myself eat the first few days...just because it was time. But if you are nauseous the Dr should have sent you home with something for it. I have Regrene or something like that...that I haven't used and compazine supporsitory's that I haven't needed either but they are there just in case. As for the pain...I used my liquid Loratab on regular basis for the first couple of days at home and still use it overnight since I have an opening (non infected) in my incision that makes it very uncomfortable. But if the nausea does not pass let your Dr's office know about it...they can usually give great advice and most of them don't mind. Just and fYI I still eat only cause it is time. I am not hungry and I stop because I have had what they say I should have or ran out of time. I have lost 23.4 doing it this way. I do get most of water and protein in each day though. That takes a lot of work.

I couldn't have done it without meds - when I had my RNY I had to be in patient for 4 days then I had a relapse of pain the day after I was released. I will tell you that encouragement and things you can do come in many forms. For one, contact your wls and see if you can use a cold pack on where it hurts. ((note: this is not intended to be medical advice, for that you need to contact your medical professional according to oh.com medical disclaimer)) 2, try to prop your feet up a bit above normal and see if that helps with your pain, sometimes I find that helps with circulation. 3. keep sipping and walking. not to mention sip more, and walk more. baby steps. this is the beginning to a new life for you. 4. find some soothing music to tune into when you hurt, and focus your energy and any pain on that. breathe through your mouth and out through your nose, deep cleansing breaths. 5. and finally, keep a journal. I encourage everyone to make this a regular habit by writing down how you are from day to day, and take this to your wls. You will be suprised at how you feel a week from now. One day at a time, and remember you can do it!! Stacey W

I know what your talking about.... Im one week out , getting caught up on the sleep helped me a great deal I was reall out of it day 4 and 5 taking the pain meds helped but walking is what helped the most..... it got the gas out lol I got to the point where I stoped the pain meds and walked a little more just to see what worked better and then I started sleeping a little better. Keep on keeping on everyone is different and remember this to shall pass. Jenny B Wise

I found that walking has helped a great deal. Thank you for reminding me this too shall pass, I keep telling myself that for each day that passes I will be better off. Juggling meds, water, vitamins, etc. gets to be a full time job. Does it get any easier?

I was just telling someone that it is funny we spend our whole life trying to get away form putting things in our mouth, hell we even had surgery to stop it and now here we are forceing ourselves. I think each day gets easyer that includes juggling these fluids we just become master jugglers and what womans is not ? lol a master that is......

It is pretty ironic isn't it..when you think of it I don't know about being a master but the juggling part I'm trying.

I ended up taking more pain & nausea meds and felt better. I keep reminding myself that each day gets better. I walk a lot and practice my breathing exercises. Didn't know if no draining from my incision was a problem, because nothing is coming out. I slept pretty good so I'll try to get more fluids in today. Thank you for the help!

You are lucky Shawn. My body hates having anything done to it so I should know that it's just going to take a while to get on my feet. Thank you for the encouragement!
