Sclerotherapy for enlarged stoma
I have seen more of a interest in posting's looking for information on the sclerotherapy procedure bieng offered to restrict food passage through an enlarged stoma. So I thought I would offer just a couple thoughts to think about when looking into having this done- I had the first procedure done in Sept 05 which was 3 yrs post op from a RNY. It worked well for a few months until the stoma tissue became relaxed again. R. Baker from MPC in GR does the procedure a only twice as the tissue becomes near impossible to inject the acid into more than two times. After loosing 17lbs we decided to go in again for a second try in Feb 06, again it works well for 4-6 months and does allow you to go back to basics but it does not provide a permanent fix and generally will loosen back up as time goes by. What I did find interesting is that the goal is to be approx 12-15 diameter for stoma size and that you can not know what you really are without a EG done and that it does make a huge difference if you are above the 15 range for long term weight loss. I am not sure what the statistics are on which is better acid or stitching of the stoma but I wish this was discussed during the preop stage. So to anyone that has it done don't go into it thinking it will magically fix things because it has a honeymoon period also and there are alot of people out there still feeling stuck on what to do next. I didn't find MPC in favor of adding the lap band after RNY for a stoma issue they tend to go back to basics on educating nutrition and excercise.
I appreciate your post, Rebecca! I am going in to have the procedure done this Friday with Dr. Baker. I do know going into it that it is not a "cure-all" ... just like WLS isn't a "cure-all" either. It's all about getting back to basics and following the pouch rules. I'm just hoping this will get things back on track for me, but I know "I" have to be in charge of my behavior. You are right. After talking to Dr. Baker, I understand it is harder to stretch the stoma again after having sclerotherapy, compared to the stitching of the stoma, which he said in most cases always stretches again if misused. I don't plan to misuse it again!
Wish me luck everyone! I will keep you posted.
Hugs, Theresa
Women,
You have been on my mind so much lately, Have you been talking about me....LOL. Those suppliments I told you about work Fantastic!!! I LOVE them I will be glad when I am weaned completely off my med. I will step down more tommorrow. I went from 200mg and I am down to 100mg with very little withdrawl. If by chance I have any problems I just take a couple of the suppliment and within 15min I feel great. The one suppliment you take everyday, but the other is just prn.
Please let me know how you are doing with the procedure with Dr. B. Talk to you later. Take care---Toni
