anyone been denied by psychiatrist after insurance approved??
I'm in the weirdest situation. i'm really getting discouraged by it.
I'm going through Hurley Bariatric of Flint. I did my psych. eval with Dr. Williams of Hurley Health. Hurley Bariatric recommended him to me. I'm bipolar, and i have a long mental health history. But, fortunately. He approved my for surgery and passed me!!
He recommended that i go through eight therapy visits pre op and 12 visits post op.
I had been going to therapy all along so the eight visits wasnt a big deal.
Okay.. After I find out i'm approved by my insurance company for surgery and waiting on my surgery date! i am told i need a letter written by my therapist saying she recommends me for surgery, and a letter written by me saying i agree to the twelve visits post op. I faxed those in as soon as my therapist was able to write the letter.
After Hurley found my chart. They Then inform me they need all the notes from my therapy sessions that I attended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This doesnt seem right! I'm so afraid the Dr. is going to look over my files and say.. oh, she was depressed on this date.. she was worried, here.. well, i think she isnt a good candidate for surgery! can this happen?!
i really am scared sick about it. my therapists office said they should be able to fax over my records within two weeks. ugh!!
I just think, if my insurance has already approved me for surgery. and my therapist recommended me for surgery.w hat does it matter what my notes say! especially since, i'm not even sure if my therapist included wls in her notes! i'm seeing a different therapist now since she got fired! hah! it's a horrible mess!
okay, this is really long. i would be seriously shocked if someone else went through the same situation. but i would love it if they did and ended up with surgery.
i really need encouragement right now.
thankyou everyone!!
i think maybe they just want "real" proof of regular attendance (detailed notes are harder to fake than "oh yeah, i've seen her x number of times", which can then be seen as a reasonable assumption of compliance with post-surgery therapy... i think they're probably just checking things out to make sure it's all legit...
This is a life changing surgery. They want to make sure that you realize just how life changing and if you can actually handle it so they don't get sued if something happens. A lot of people go into a depression after this surgery (it shouldn't last too long) and I would imagine they want to make sure you are able to ride it out.
thanks Ann... i understand.
i know i'm able to ride it out. it's just unfortunate that, that desicion is left up to third parties that dont know anything about me. And the reason my therapist was fired was because she didnt maintain paperwork properly. so i'm not even sure what she wrote in her notes!
thankyou Raphie for responding also.
i'll just wait and see.
Of course I'm not an expert on psychiatry or anything, this is just MHO. Hurley has no right to those notes. I can understand them wanting your therapist to clear you. I can also understand them wanting you to agree to see someone after surgery. Your visits with other therapists are private, and they should not be asking for them. I think you have done enough to ensure them that you are at least willing to try to keep yourself healthy, both mentally and physically.
If I were you, I'd refuse, and tell them you'll go to another facility if they insist on reading over your past history. Just because this is elective surgery and you may want it very badly, they can't make unreasonable requests like this.
Good Luck to you.
Brenda
Hi Brenda.
I probably should've taken that stance. However, i signed the release to have my therapists office send out the notes. I feel like a doormat and a fool. My whole life wide open for these people, most of which, has nothing to do with weight loss surgery.
I agree with you. Though, I suppose I will wait it out with Hurley and see what they have to say after they recieve the notes. I may end up dealing with another hospital if the psychiatrist at Hurley decides that my lifes trials and tribulations deems me unworthy of surgery.
I hope they dont blow it for me for surgery elsewhere.
