anyone had a positive blood occult test after surgery?
Dr. wanting me to get a colonoscopy. I feel great, I was told that it isn't uncommon for you to have a positive result for up to a year after surgery by the gastroenterologist. He made it quite clear he dissapproved of bariatric surgery. I don't want to go through it. I have a hard enough time eating and drinking without having to drink that crap again. I am 8 mos out and down over 100 lbs. I need some input. I moved out of state and have all new doctors that I don't entirely trust yet. Help me please.

I had a colonoscopy about eight months after surgery, shortly after I turned 50. Routine test, just because I turned 50 and colon cancer runs in the family. The prep is quite different if you tell them you had bariatric surgery ... at least it was for me.Then again, the GI doc was in the same group as the bariatric surgeon (MMPC) so they knew exactly the right prep to give me. I didn't have to drink that much ... I took some pills, drank a little bit of sugar-free ginger ale, it cleaned me right out without as much pain as the gallon of that nasty tasting stuff in the past. So, if your doctor insists and you trust this guy, make sure you tell him to give you the proper prep for a post-bariatric patient. If you don't trust this doc, go to a different doc. Ask for a referral from your bariatric surgeon to a doctor in your new state.
Good luck.

Bleeding is bleeding. I have NEVER heard that having occult blood is normal after bariatric surgery. You need the colonoscopy. The bleeding could be as simple as a hemorrhoid, or it couldbe a GI bleed, which you can still feel good, but will have BIG problems if left unattended. Just my nursing opinion. Carol
