I am a gastric post op, 3 years out, i recently had thyroid surgery and they are having a real problem adjusting my thyroid. I am now at 200mcg of thyroid a day, and my dr. says i don't seem to be absorbing all of it, which is normal because gastric people don't absorb everything. My major concern is, i'm gaining weight!! my dr. assures me it will calm down as i get adjusted with my thyroid. I haven't talked to my gastric dr. yet, but am wondering if anyone has had this problem and maybe has a solution. thanks for any help.

HI Carol, I had a hypothyroid (underactive) before I even had surgery, and it DOES cause you to gain weight until you find the right medication and the right dosage level. But once you find it - you'll stop gaining and should actually be able to lose if you want to. THere are a few different kinds of thyroid replacement meds out there ... so if one is not working, ask your doc if there's another you can try. I haven't had any issues since I've had surgery - I was actually hoping that my thyroid would "normalize" and I wouldnt have to take that medication - but no such luck! Looks like I'll be a 'lifer'. Good luck! Hope this helped in some small way. Hugs Sydney
