Surgery in the morning

Well, surgery is at 11:30am. They told me to be there by 9:30. I am nervous. My husband is nuts. My boys don't get it. They want to know why I don't take medicine instead. I am wondering about the process. How long does it take? Surgery and recovering until you are awake? Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers. Thanks.

Tiffany, My surgery took about two hours, but I was pretty much out of it the rest of the day from the drugs. I was up and walking that evening, though. Not far, but at least up and moving. If you weren't nervous, you wouldn't be normal. I'll be thinking of you. Good luck! Marie

Man i remember how nervous i was too.......i finally got to the point of--just knock me out--i dont want to have to fuss anymore! grin I am not sure what procedure you are having to it is hard to give you concretes about timing etc.....but believe me, you will sail through the day--it may feel a little longer for your family who is waiting, but for you once they start knocking you out it is like the day flies by! and you will be so glad you are doing this Tiffany. It iwll add such quality to your life and that of your family! you just have to keep thinking of the long term bennies! and then follow docs directions for activity and intake........and it will be such a ride...after you get through the first few days--you will just be amazed....but keep coming here for support--each step forward always has its pluses and minuses.....so talk to people about how you are feeling. WE want you to have support on your journey! hug rae

Best of luck you will be in my prayers. My surgery was May 9. I had a lot of people trying to convince me before surgery not to do it and some family who weren't even supportive. Many of the attitudes have changed now that it's done. The day of surgery is usually a wash from the time they give you anesthesia. Surgery 1-2 hrs usually, recovery 1-2 hrs then back to you room. The rest of the time is spent trying to get your pain medication regulated and start your post op exercises, including breathing and walking. It's kind of a blurr. My course went just as the doctor predicted for a VSG. First full day post op I felt pretty good, second day I felt bad again, third day pretty good though up and down went home that day - (usually sooner for roux en y) and now not quite 5 full days after surgery I'm feeling pretty darn good. People are more supportive too - amazing. No weight loss in fact I'm up from pre-surgery, but I think there's a lot of bloating, extra fluid etc. and I haven't been exercising to my usual level yet of course. I did go for a 1 mile slow walk today though - Yeah!
