TLC's new series Big Medicine follows the journeys of individuals undergoing gastric bypass surgery at the weight loss institute developed and created by Dr. Garth Davis and his father Dr. Robert Davis in Houston, TX
Garth and his father perform gastric bypass surgeries on individuals weighing from 400 to 1,000 lbs and even those that have had botched surgeries. His team also includes psychologists to help individuals after they undergo the life-changing surgery, dieticians to teach the patients healthy ways of eating and sex therapists to help patients who are now finding sexual interest from other people after having been ignored for so many years.
Along with the remarkable weight-loss stories that will be witnessed is the turbulent relationship that exists between the father and son team. True to the old ways of medicine, Garth's father hates to be questioned and finds many new techniques to be too flashy and unnecessary.
The new-age Garth practices yoga and meditation much to the dismay of his father. Even while operating on patients, the father/son team will argue, each supremely confident that their way is the right way. With the patient's success as their primary goal, they must compromise and come to a common ground on how best to treat the patient.
