I have a friend *****cently had Lap Rny @ Barix with Dr. Popalowski (sp?). I am concerned for her as the basic rules of post op eating/etc differs so much from mine that before I try to step in and offer 'coaching or advice', I need to ask you post op patients of Dr. Pop's some questions. 1. how many carbs can you consume in one day? 2. how many meals do you eat a day, and how often? 3. how many grams of protein are you doing per day? 4. do you watch and monitor sodium? 5. what did he tell you about soda pop? 6. how many post op visits do you have with him for follow up? I'd appreciate any insight to these and anything else you care to share as I have some concerns for her and want to educate myself before I try to talk to her about it. Thank you!!!

1. how many carbs can you consume in one day? Honestly I never counted carbs. I just stay away from really high fat and high sugar things. some people go crazy counting EVERYTHING. So I only count the fat, protein and sugar! 2. how many meals do you eat a day, and how often? I eat every 2 hours. From a piece of fresh fruit to cubes of chesse. I make sure my metabolism is always working! 3. how many grams of protein are you doing per day? My first year of WLS I have to have at 59 grams, Now they want me to have 49 grams. 4. do you watch and monitor sodium? No not really. 5. what did he tell you about soda pop? I havent drank pop in 9 years, so it wasnt a problem for me, But Dr. POP said NO MORE POP. the carbon. is bad for your new tummy, and the sugar is high! Just a bad thing to have PERIOD! 6. how many post op visits do you have with him for follow up? I seen Dr. POP 2 weeks, then 1 month, then 1 year after! and then i go once a year to see him!

Hey Stacy Dr. Poplawski has on staff dietation on staff everyday for your friend she can call them also for help and there is never any charge. Barix Clinic is there to also help your friend and I am sure Dr. Poplawski would want to know if somthing odd is going on.... So you might want to let her know these things, she can get an appointment to see him even if it is not time for her to go in. He is a true believer in eating disorders.

I'm not saying anything is wrong.  I am curious as to why her eating differs so much from mine. Why does she eat so many carbs? Why is she allowed to have pop after 6 mo? Why is her protein so low compared to my wls levels? I'm not sure being 3 months out she realizes there is anything wrong but before I speak to her I want to know. I am sure that if she IS concerned she'd call Barix but according to her, what she is doing is fine. And if my WLS heard this?  He'd slap me!

Dr. Pop's rules are NO POP ..period.  That was made very clear.  We do not count carbs but we do stick to food basics, and stay away from white flour.  I was told to consume 67 gr. of protien each day. and to eat 3 small meals and 3 small snacks each day. I probably had 4 or 5 post op visits.

Katie, Thanks for your reply.  I am just concerned because this friend is new and I am just trying to be supportive.  With that said, every surgeon has his guidelines and without knowing what they are, I cannot be supportive of her weight loss. Any thoughts on how to talk to her with the intent to be supportive? Thanks so much!

Hey Stacey 1.  Dr pop says...... no more then 150gms of carbs a day always eat your protein first and when you chose a carb make it a good one 2.  4-6 every few hrs 3. The dietitians figure this out everyone is different Im 64 or more, your friend should have a big 3 ring binder with all the info. 4.  NO just know where sodium goes so dose water. 5. Barix says 6mon...Dr pop says never....lol 6.  I have had 2 wks   6wks.....  will have 90 days  6months 9 months and 1 yr... then every yr after that.
