Does Ins. check your WL attempts?

I need to get together my weight loss attempts/history.  I am not sure about some of the dates, and my doctor was not always aware of what diet I was on and when.  Is this a problem?

I have BCBS Comm Blue PPO and I believe they required at least 6 months supervised WL attempts, etc. I had this documented from my PCP. Like Jay said, Ins companies are different so check with them.

Stacey, you're right 6 months documented and supervised. The good news is that all the doc needs to have written down can be as little as "discussed with patient her current diet and weight" Doesn't need to be elaborate or anything BCBS CB PPO is great!

I have BCBS - Blue Choice and I had to have 12 month supervised diet with my doctor.  You can call your insurance company and ask them what their requirement is for the surgery and ask them to send you a copy.   Best of Luck.

I learned this lesson the hard way.  Even if you talk to your doctor about your diet / exercise program and you have actual conversations about your attempts ---- if he doesn't write anything down in your medical records the insurance company doesn't think it exists.  And often a doctor can't or won't go back and amend his in-office notes just because you want him to.  And often an insurance company won't accept a letter written by your doctor saying you've been dieting.   So my advice is to find out right away what your insurance company requires (call the number on the back of your insurance card)... make sure you actually have what is required (don't assume) ... and if you don't have that doctor documented diet history - start immediately.  And make sure he writes the information down!  (Duh!  You'd think he'd do that automatically, huh?) I went through 12 months of dieting and checking in with my doctor.  Only to find out he hadn't written any notes in my file and wouldn't/couldn't amend his notes.  So I had to start all over with another 12 months of dieting.  This time around I've got a new doctor (obviously I fired the old one) and am going through a diet program recommended by my surgeon's office.   In my experience with BC/BS of Michigan PPO - my own diet history was worthless for approval of surgery.  However, it was a really good exercise for on a personal level because seeing all my diet attempts down on paper made it clear to me that I really did try everything and that I really was at the end of my rope with dieting.  So even if you don't need it for insurance approval, do it anyway just for your peace of mind.
