Arthritis and WLS

All, I did try posting something similar on the main board, so sorry for the cross-posting (though only 35 read the other post).  I'm looking at having an RNY done hopefully sometime in early July.  I'm hoping the surgeon's office can submit by the end of this week and that my insurance will be quick (hey I can hope on this one!)  Anyways, I suffer from moderate psoriasis and also psoriatic arthritis which actually spurred this last weight gain that has lead me to opt for surgery.  Currently I'm on enbrell which is an immune system suppressant and I know that I'll be off from it for probably 4-6 weeks post-op and probably a couple of weeks pre-op.  What I'm wondering from those of you out there: If you are on any immune system sup resent for whatever reason RA, MS, Crohn's, or anything else what was your experience? I'm meeting with my rheumy tomorrow, but looking for anyone else who's had to deal with this type medication. Thanks --Sax

I'm not sure of your situation but I take Celebrex for arthritis. 200 mg daily. As for the other medication I don't know what it is. Take Schuhknecht a peanut butter sandwich next time you see him. And tell me about your name. kp

I have RA and use Enbrel as well.  I had RNY two years ago and had to stop the Enbrel 4 weeks prior to my surgery.  My rhuematologist recommended that I have steroids through my IV during and immediately after the surgery.  I started back on Enbrel 3 weeks after surgery (I really needed it by then!) and have done fine since.  My surgeon told me that typically he does not recommend rny to people with RA because I wouldn't ever be able to take ibuprofen again.  Since the Enbrel has taken care of most of the pain and swelling, I have no need for motrin.  I take tylenol for headaches.  Hope this helps.  I'd be happy to give you more info if you have more specific questions. Thanks for the reply.  I talked to my rhuemy yesterday and she told me I'd have to stop for probably 1 week prior to surgery and wait 2-3 weeks post-surgery.  I'll let me surgeon make the final call on it.  I've responded great to the enbrell and haven't needed my celebrex or anything else except occasionally so I'm not really worried about the ibuprofen.  Glad to hear things went well and this does help. --Sax
