Hi, I'm new to the board
Hi, I'm Kate from Swartz Creek, MI. Just ahd my consult yesterday with Dr. Kam in Ypsilanti. I have to have an endoscopy (since I take a LOT of pain pils for multiple herniated discs in my neck and back), a nuclear stress test (since my mobility is limited due to the discs), and a meeting with a shrink. I also have to quit smoking-already got my scrip for Chantix.
I have a few questions:
1. how does the surgery affect my ability to take meds? At last count, I'm taking 25 pills a day, including vitamins and supplements.
2. what about vitamins postop? do you have to buy them through a certain place or can they be over the counter?
3. what about food choices if I hate turkey, fish, and yogurt?
4. are diet soft drinks allowed?
I should've asked more questions after the meeting, but I was there for over 3 hours before I saw the doctor, and the pain was getting very bad.
Sorry to ramble on-I'm excited about the surgery and nervous at the same time:)
HI Kate, welcome!
1. At the beginning i had to take liquid meds or chewable. No pills for a while. No Nsaids, sorry i don't have list of meds for post op
2. i buy my vitamins from the vitamin shoppe. Again, chewable right after surgery.
3. i don't do fish or yogurt too. I do eat turkey, chicken, cottage cheese and stuff like that. I do protein shakes too.
4. no diet soft drinks. I drink sf crystal light, sf tropicana lemonade (there's fruit punch too) water, sf kool aid.
I know the meetings can be both exciting and overwhelming. What i always did was when i had a question i would write it down for the next time i seen my surgeon, it helped a lot. Also, read profiles and get educated on what you're about to do. wls is a great thing, but it does have risks. Good luck in your journey!
Linda
Well first of all Dr. Kam is great and for your question...I will try to answer....
!, You have to cut your pills into pieces that are smaller than an M&M..
2. Dr. Kam has me taking 2 sugar free Bugs bunny chewables daily..
3. There are alot of other things out there other than turkey fish and yogurt.
4. No soda for the first 6 months after surgery...
If you have any other questions ask away.
1. I went from 8 prescribed meds to 3 plus liquid lortab.
2. Besides my flinstone complete, I also have to take a b-12 and iron (they were low at surgery)
3. work with what you like to eat. Cheese, chicken, soups, there are alot of protien supplements.
4. no soft drinks, straws or caffine for 6 months.
I seen Dr. Kam yesterday too, at about 2:30. He is a wonderful surgeon. I am 2 weeks out today, and wish I would have done it years ago. The staff at Barix is wonderful too. Call them with questions, any questions, they are willing to help.
Hi Kate,
Welcome to the boards! As others have said meds: chewable or crushed; very small pc. After surgery you may get taken off some these meds.; if not right away very shortly! I am down to less the a fourth of my meds now; I am at 4 months post op! Vitamins I take chewable adult certrums, sublingual vit. b-12, and chewable calicum. I buy my vitamins at Walmart; and protein powder too. I also use GNC 50 grand slam premixed protein; it is not bad at all in lots of flavors.
No soft drinks; expands your pouch! Food choices for me: cottage cheese, cheeses, turkey, fish, tender beef jerky, beef very tenderized, chicken (canned in begining), triscut flavored crackers. They should give you a diet program to follow at first so that your new stomach has time to heal. Don't push yourself to quickly! Best wishes & good luck. Welcome to the losing side! Sincerely, Judy R
